Please read the rules before participating in this thread.

    Week 44: VTAC Reload Drill
results may be posted until 11:59pm EDT on Monday 17-September-2012.

    Range: 10 yds
    Target: IPSC target A-zone
    Start position: concealed
    Rounds fired: 3 + 3 + 3 = 9 shots

Here is a video with Kyle Lamb demonstrating the Reload Drill: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vc_-mlWtgs. Shooters start facing an IPSC target from 10 yds away. On the buzzer, draw and fire 3 rounds from concealment, reload, fire 3 additional shots, reload again, and fire a final 3 shots.

Please report the following when responding to this thread:
    • Start position (pistol, holster type, concealment)
    • Report the time to complete and number of hits to the A-zone.

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

Note, if you need an IPSC A-zone, feel free to download this one and print on legal paper:

I got a surprise chance to hit the range today, no time to print out the A-zone. So I used 2" dots at 3yd. Not sure how close this comes in terms of difficulty but I know it's not apple to apples, I'll update if I get a chance to hit the range again this week with the correct target. Gen3G19 AIWB in a Keeper from under a tshirt firing Aguila 124gr FMJ.

    Ran it 4 times:

    2.35/.72/.72 2.93/.63°/.61 3.03/.80/.50° = 12.29 -2
    2.31°/.72/.61 2.98/.60/.57 2.88°/.58°/.55° =11.80 -4
    2.12/.73°/.72° 3.03/.68/.59 3.01/.60/.56° = 12.04 -3
    2.60/.91/1.14 3.93/.88/.87 4.22/1.15/.98 = 16.68 clean

I ran this one four times a couple days ago about the middle of my practice session. My first run I was pretty conservative, and on my second run I decided it would be a good idea to ride the slide stop and prevent lock back on the first reload. The last two went ok, although my reloads weren't where I think they should have been.

Target: Action Target 40% IPSC Torso (body is ~7"wide x 9"high)

    Gun: Gen 4 Glock 17

Gear: Comp Tac Paddle holster, Comp Tac double mag pouch, Woolrich Vest

    1st: 7.84 clean (1.73, .33, .32, 2.17, .34, .31, 2.09, .30, .25)
    2nd: 8.41 clean (1.51, .31, .27, 2.68, .39, .33, 2.37, .28, .27)
    3rd: 7.41 clean (1.59, .30, .29, 2.00, .29, .28, 2.06, .33, .27)
    4th: 7.23 -1 (1.44, .41, .33, 2.05, .27, .26, 1.99, .24, .24)

I tried to run this one today, but forgot my shot timer (among other things.) So I substituted with a turning target.

Gen4 Glock 34 w/ Warren Tactical sights, Safariland 5198 holster under an open-front shirt.
    #1 - 8.5sec par, -1
    #2 - 8.5sec par, clean
#3 - 8.0sec par, -2 (rode the slide release on the last reload, and sacrificed the last two shots.)

I'll run it again for real on Saturday.

Experimented with hands-up (which Kyle Lamb shows in the video) and hands-down (my preference) start positions. Did a bad job making all the hits. I had it set in my mind that I wanted to try to do it under 5 seconds. Totally didn't.

    Run 1, hands up: 5.86 -2 (1.11, .22, .23, 1.64, .23, .21, 1.77, .23, .22)
    Run 2, hands up: 5.69 -2 (1.02, .21, .20, 1.70, .22, .20, 1.72, .24, .18)
    Run 3, hands down: 5.24 -3 (.93, .21, .20, 1.55, .21, .19, 1.53, .22, .20)
    Run 4, hands down: 5.83 clean (.99, .25, .24, 1.63, .24, .22, 1.75, .26, .25)

I got to the range and couldn't remember the distance, so I did it at 7 yards. I might have a chance to do it over.

    Gen 3 G-17 Comp-Tac Paddle under a 511 vest.

    1st run: 8.15 -1
    2nd run: 7.59 clean
    3rd run: 7.46 clean.

My 1 shot outside would have been a hit on an IDPA target.

    I used the 8" circle of a Q-PT instead of an A-zone, 10yd. Shot from concealment (5-Shot Leather SME aiwb, SACS/Warren 9mm 1911).

The drill didn't specify slidelock or not, so I ran both ways:

    slidelock: 7.50, all hits
    in-battery: 7.36, all hits

Draws were ok, splits were reasonable given the target. Reloads... they were horrible. Yesterday was an experiment of sorts, I went a whopping four days without any dry fire or practice to see what would happen to my reloads. The result was that every bit of improvement I've made over the past few weeks was washed away. I'm on the precipice of abandoning the 1911 test altogether.
