Thread: The Pin Shoot Central Lake MI

Great review, Randy. As to the 9mm events, I shot some tables with flat-nose 147 grain subsonic and results were less desirable than the 127 grain +P+.

It may be significant that when I interviewed the winner of Stock Minor, Richard Hupp, he told me he had used his S&W 627 with full power .357 loads, which have always done well for him at this event. Stock Minor was intended for 9mm, but note that this does not preclude the shooter from using a more potent caliber in that event.

Yeah, if confronted with pins needing to be knocked off the table again in the minor event I'd probably just roll with the same Springfield Trophy Match that I used in the Stock Gun event. In fact I would probably shoot it in Pin Gun, Stock and Stock Minor and use my Glock 30 for the CCW event.

Does anyone have confirmed dates yet for the Pin Shoot for 2025? We are making tentative plans to be in the area next year. Right now I'm reserving the week of 9-13 June 2025, which seems about right based on the schedule previously.

The e-mail I got this week said the 2025 shoot will be June 7 to June 12.

@Randy Harris @MVS @Mas great reports and very useful reviews on the Pin Shoot, especially the comments on ammo.

What would you say was the most effective bullet (either 9mm / .357 / .45 ACP) folks were using this year?

I currently have two picked out; Speer Gold Dot 124+p for 9mm (Concealed Carry / Stock Minor) and Winchester Ranger RA45T 230 JHP +p for .45 ACP (Stock Gun). I’m wondering if I should stick to those loads and keep working on shot placement, or go find something zippier.

    Thanks!

If I go again, I probably won't shoot 9 in anything but go with .40. They said there would be some changes for next year, one of them being Concealed carry going to a minor set. Even so, I think I will go heavier than 9. When Mas was explaining things to me, he talked about it in terms of power factor. IIRC he mentioned 180 as a floor. He can correct me on that and it won't hurt my feelings.

Aargh, dammit, my last post didn't take apparently.

Rich, you'll do fine with 230 grain +P JHP; it has always taken the pins off well for me.

In the 9mm events, for Stock Minor I agree with Randy and next year will shoot it with a .45; rules don't say you can't, if and you're limited to 8 rounds, what the hell. If the rules say "pins off the table," it's a momentum game and heavier bullets make a positive difference.

For the 9X12 where you can have lots of bullets, I found +P+ 127 grain worked better than 147 subsonic, for me anyway. But Randy makes a good point: a 16-shot .40 with 180 grain flat nose should take the pins off more decisively than an 18-shot 9mm when the stopwatches are ticking and the time doesn't . "Momentum game"...

It's nice in MI in June. We've booked an RV park in Petoskey again, but Charlevoix, just down the road, is lovely.
