Thread: Active Shooter Uvalde TX Elementary School

I agree on alternatives… but it is FL. My BIL was a DOT trooper down there and they weren’t swimming in resources (got in right before the merge with SP). Probably not painting the state fairly, but smaller departments/agencies likely aren’t able to provide more expensive toys. Hell, Hi-Point giving carbines to less funded departments would be accepted with open arms.

I’m definitely biased, being long gun options with Federal agencies is a little less of a hassle. Only positive I could suggest would have been if the Boston F/O didn’t pull our 14” 870s… because that was f***ing dumb.

I over-quoted. Good on the external carriers. I don’t see how they could NOT be used in that heat.

Number one importance is getting all the schools in the district to buy-in on the idea that the building needs to be secure. I have no idea how it’s done in that part of FL but if the staff and faculty are all on board with simple things like keeping doors locked, that’s usually the biggest hurdle.

Number two should a heavy emphasis on patrol-level tactics training.

Once all that is sorted out, I think a secure safe in the SRO’s office containing a legit long arm would be money better spent. Hell, make it a .300 Rattler so it can be easily moved to and from the school in a sneaky bag if the school doesn’t want it there overnight.

And the idea is not to run to the office to get it, it’s only there in case the SRO is in the office when something happens. Out in the hallway, or cafeteria? Make do with your pistol.

This may be a little kooky but... I was watching Deviant Olam for entertainment earlier and it got me to thinking. I wonder if he has knowledge to impart to those who might be charged with breaching doors.

I believe I recall seeing some footage of the Uvalde classroom from the outside and the doorway was recessed in from the hall. That seems, in my unexpert opinion, to massively increase the suck for anyone in the vicinity of the doorknob. You are canalized before you even start... Anywho, it would be interesting to me to see how Deviant Olam would approach that problem; to include alternative avenues into the room (windows, ceiling, whatever).

His channel really opened my eyes to how much "security" is mere theatre - to include that at supposedly secure federal buildings. I suspect patrol officers could put a lot of his knowledge to good use, and not just in active shooter situations.

It's not so much theatre as much as it is trying to address realistic problems in an ascending order of priorities, and making that functional for operations.

Deviant Ollum is a physical penetration specialist. He uses his YEARS of practice to spend extraordinary amounts of time when nobody is around/looking to figure out weaknesses for a specific problem at a time, which he can then replicate in fashion at a later time on that specific problem for video demonstration.

It's a completely different universe than in-extremis forcible entry, at which he has zero experience/application. In such applications, teaching his stuff to cops in an active shooter class would amount to parlor tricks that are super cool to see but not very useful for the participants to apply in real life across their broad spectrum of environments.

The classic look for law enforcement pretty much worldwide is a slung MP-5 or similar SMG.

Wouldn't that be a huge liability the 99.99% of the time there are no active shooters? How do you keep it secure when you have to go hands-on with an unarmed but obstinate teenager who was merely throwing shit at their teacher or selling pills from their locker?

Which is why I would go with a backpack gun if I was gonna do it.

TLDR: DPS Captain who showed up on scene 7 minutes before the adhoc BORTAC team made entry and killed the shooter tried to order the BORTAC team to stand down and not make entry because the Captain thought a “better” team was coming. Luckily the Captain’s order was ignored.

Not a good look for DPS given the blame they’ve placed on the locals.

DPS captain reportedly ordered officers not to enter Robb Elementary 70 minutes into shooting response
New audio recording reveals DPS veteran believes highly-skilled team was responding

UVALDE, Texas – A Texas Department of Public Safety captain reportedly ordered his officers not to enter Robb Elementary 70 minutes into the 77-minute shooting, according to CNN.
CNN’s report cites a new audio recording of Capt. Joel Betancourt from May 24.
The 15-year DPS veteran said he believed a more highly-skilled team was coming, CNN reports.
The audio from the police radio broadcast was captured on officers’ body-worn cameras. It was also noted in the memos written by several DPS officers just two days after the shooting.
He told investigators he arrived at Robb Elementary School around 12:45 p.m. -- minutes before the gunman was confronted and killed, CNN reports.

“Hey, this is DPS Captain Betancourt. The team that’s going to make breach needs to stand by. The team that’s gonna breach needs to stand by,” Betancourt said to his team at 12:48 p.m. on May 24, CNN heard on the audio.

CNN reports Betancourt also told investigators he wasn’t sure what has happening first-hand inside Robb Elementary, and he wasn’t aware that a specialized Border Patrol tactical unit was confronting the gunman.

He said he thought a better unit was en route to the school, so he told the breach team to stand by, CNN reports. Betancourt said no one responded or followed his order.

Betancourt is reportedly still on active duty with DPS. He is also among seven DPS officers under investigation in connection with the Uvalde school shooting.

On Thursday, KSAT Investigates confirmed one of those officers used her leave time before resigning from DPS, only to join Uvalde CISD Police Department the next day.
