H.C.A.R. Package OHIO ORDNANCE HCAR IRRATIONAL DESIRE.

H.C.A.R. Package OHIO ORDNANCE HCAR IRRATIONAL DESIRE.

For some reason I want a HCAR, probably because I can not afford a Colt Monitor or a FN/D BAR.
Back about 1980 I shot a SA/FA BAR and liked it.
I wanted it lighter, shorter & able to mount optics.

    In 7.62 x 51, I have had several AR10 Armalites, HK91s, Galils, Match & plain M1As, FALs, Garands, FN SCAR 17.
My favorite Iron sighted battle rifle is A Para FAL like 50.63.
    I kept FAL, SCAR17.

Anyway in a HCAR there are: 16" & 20" barrel lengths, black (nitride I think) and flat dark earth finishes.

I would like to try one of these at distance ( 500 yds +) as well as closer. My intent is to put a variable scope on it and iron sights as well.

    Any thoughts on:
Black vs Flat Dark Earth ?
    16" vs 20" barrel length ?

    Scope / Mounts.

Anybody: with HCAR experience ? , a good source to buy from ?

    Thanks.

Got a 16" FDE HCAR coming from OOW.

Had a chance t handle and dry fire one, well made, trigger is not bad. For a 11 3/4 lb rifle it handles well.

Hopefully this will satisfy my Monitor / Limo Protection BAR fantasies.

What would you scope it with, I have a 500 yard range in my yard ?

    I was thinking either a 1X - 6, 8 X etc. 1st or 2nd plane.

Alternatively a higher power scope and a red dot for close ?

It has been 10+ years since I did much long range rifle work and scopes have changed a lot.

    Back then I was using 3.5x - 10x Leupolds on .308, NF 5.5 x - 22x on McMillian Tac 50 and ACOG TA11E on FALs and AR10s.

At this point There is a lot I do not know.

    Thanks,

Seeing as the whole thing is an anachronism of sorts, I'd happily run a TA11 on a BAR if the mounting options worked for it. It'd be interesting to see how it does with really good glass at long range though.

A more pragmatic option may be for a 1-6x in a super low set of rings, depending on how it works with optics.

I think I will try it with one of my NF NSXs for distance and my AGOG TA 11E for closer.

NSX will let me see how it works at distance.

I have a desire for an HCAR also. Maybe I'll eventually get one, maybe (probably) I won't. But if I did I would get a 20" barrel because it's not like I'm clearing buildings with it so might as well get the extra velocity and less muzzle flash. And I would get the FDE because black guns get stupid hot on sunny days.

You're are correct. We are all terrible people and our mothers are very disappointed. (even though mine won't admit it)

The HCAR is a modernized B.A.R. They made 30 round mags that, I think, work in the old BARs. They also make semi-auto replicas of the old BAR. I know there's probably no market but I think I'd rather have a replica of an FND or Monitor. Anyway, here's a video of the HCAR.

    OOW HCAR MALFUNCTIONS

I had this happen 8 times in 80 rounds with 150 gr FMJ 30-06 and 173 gr Lake City Match 30-06.

in some cases case stopped bolt further back.

It happened with 2 different OOW HCAR 30 round mags.

It happened with mags fully loaded and about 1/2 empty.

It happened on both medium ( normal) and high (dirty)gas settings.

I did not try the low ( suppressed ) setting. I will try that next.

    My guesses :

Bolt outrunning magazine feed, seen this on pistols, not so much on rifles ?

Magazine not feeding fast enough ?

Too much gas, too fast a cycle / bounce for magazine to feed in time ?

Not enough gas, bolt not coming back all the way and not letting the cartridge get all the way out of the mag before bolt comes forward ?

    HCAR is new from OOW.

    Any thoughts ?

First guess is Not Enough Spring because, man, that thing will probably have to have an absolutely massive spring to handle a stack of 30 .30-06 rounds.

Try a 20-round GI BAR mag? It is compatible with standard mags right?
