When I sold and made glasses, Varilux were considered to be the high end, "Cadillac" brand. We had a handful of customers who wanted them. As I understand it, they are only done at certain wholesale labs, and it's rumored they have high quality standards as part of their contracts with said labs. I don't wear progressives, so I can't comment there.
If the PD or segment height is off, nothing else will work right. The frames can help or hinder that process--wrap around frames aren't your friend. This means that if they aren't fitting properly, you could have issues, so add it to the list of things to which you ought to be mindful.
Good luck, MGW.

Every time I changed lenses I got headaches for a little while. But I don't know which ones I get, if i put them on and can see further then before I consider that a success

Rapidly changing prescriptions can be a sign of corneal problems so you may want to keep that in mind and get a second opinion or get in to an Opthalmalogist.
