Unlike the rifle version where the magazine laid horizontally across the top of the rifle, the LMG would use a unique 300 round magazine inserted into the stock.

The most striking thing in that post is the age of the uniform of the soldier posing for the reloading.

Here's the ACR report that details how all of the rifles performed, with detailed analysis on the G11 as well. TL;DR - the G11 and other ACR candidates had markedly worse hit probability then the M16 with iron sights.

Note the other issues with the G11 besides its poor hit probability:

The coolest ACR candidate sadly did not make it into the trials: plastic cased 5mm, 60rd full auto with low recoil, using 100% tracers to improve hit probability:

That ARES was fascinating, thank you. As a simple and stupid civilian, separate from military usage or application, I love tracer ammunition so very much.

We should throw up some AN-94 info in this thread as well. It seems as though both East and West we’re trying to get better hits by firing multiple projos before recoil could take effect. The answers we seemed to actually settle on were optics, free-floated barrels, and better trigger mechanisms.

It seems like there might be a real benefit to “balanced recoil”, if it could be implemented in a lighter, simpler sort of design. It seems like every shooting discipline, from clay shooting, to PRS, to action pistol and beyond have firmly settled in minimizing recoil to maximize performance.
Per the PF Code of Conduct, I have a commercial interest in the StreakTM product as sold by Ammo, Inc.

Spyderco, Bergeron - thanks for all the info - these things are fascinating.

The Steyr candidate was also super sexy. Probably would have been reasonably cheap.

Per the ACR, both the ammo and the rifle would have been a good bit cheaper then the M16/5.56

The downside is they never perfected the accuracy (although its possible they could had they had more time):
