You know, they almost didn't let me in the Coast Guard because of my height? The old rules stated that you had to be at least six feet tall so if your boat sank you could walk back to shore without getting your head wet.

    Why 4 shots?

Why is string #5 4 shots? What does shooting 4 rounds teach me?

    "5.) 4 shots on 8” circle @ 15 yds x 10 (40 rds)"

I built the drill to deal with IDPA specifically - you'll see a lot of IDPA stages that start with "shoot 2-6 rounds while retreating at T1". So I split the difference between 2 and 6 and went with 4.

I'm leaving for vacation shortly, so I won't be able to participate in the drill, but....being a short guy myself, I think I might have a zinger.

What does Caleb say when he sees a Geico poster/ad/commercial??

Sorry Caleb, but I just got ragged on for the last 2 days by Todd, and this was an easy lay-up. Certainly easier than my FAST

It won't teach you anything, except when you make a mistake a realize it. But it will give you practice at:

    • Pressing the trigger properly at speed.
    • Seeing the sight lift in recoil.
    • Resetting in recoil.
    • Tracking the sight back into the notch for fast follow-up shots.
    • Verifying your grip will stay steady through multiple shots.

Could you do that with a 6-shot Bill Drill, instead? Absolutely. You'd get in fewer draws, though. Four shots instead of six means 50% more draw practice. And, it seems pretty clear Caleb was trying to make this exactly 150rd. Ten reps of 4 fit into that nicely.

edited to add mandatory short joke: Or maybe Caleb just can't reach the sixth round.

    IDPA Drill Results

Was able to run Caleb's drill today during my practice session in Hamilton, OH. Warmed up with shooting some DEA Dots @ 3, 5 & 7 yds from holster and then set up a PT Target (used the 3x5 as the 6" head box). Here are my best times and first shot times for each stage. I only recorded a best time when I had 100% hits. I'm running a Glock 19 (Gen3) w/ Leupold DeltaPoint optic, kydex holster under a Woolrich tactical vest.
    1.) 8.92 (+2sec for 3x5 miss)/2.14
    2.) 2.16/1.79
    3.) 2.73/1.95
    4.) 5.55/2.38
    5.) 4.15/2.47
    6.) 3.06/1.84
    7.) 6.20 (no misses)/2.14

Comments: It's a lot of shooting. I liked the 15 yd #5 - found it to be a good way to concentrate on a smooth draw. I closed out my session with 10 shots strong hand and 10 shots weak hand at the 2" circles from 5 yds and then called it a day. I don't have too many 200 round range sessions, so may do this drill once a month.

    Drill of the week results

Saw this drill a while back on IDPA.tv

Shot it yesterday at my local club.

Im using a Glock 19 gen 3 with Heinie sights. Custom kydex hoster made by myself, CR Speed IDPA belt, Fobus double mag pouch and a normal cotton fishing vest

    1.) 5.89
    2.) 2.18
    3.) 2.28
    4.) 3.69
    5.) 2.57
    6.) 2.43
    7.) 4.54

These are the best times with no misses.

    Things i learnt:
    - Training with a partner would make it easier to recored timesm patch etc and also give a competitive edge.
    - Some weak hand and strong hand only would be good to add before

A good fun drill though. Took about an hour from start to finish.

G19 w/H1 carried AIWB in a Fricke Seraphim from under a raw silk Hawaiian shirt.

Best clean score for each section of drill:

    1. 6.16s
    2. 1.99s
    3. 1.90s
    4. 3.97s
    5. 2.58s
    6. 2.43s
    7. 5.56s

Note, don't do drills in raw silk shirts, as they tend to catch on things and rip...
