Thread: Federal's newish .30 Super, aka a 'spicier' 7.65x20mm Longue

  1. #171
It's been 6 months since we have learned of this revolutionary cartridge, so I went to www.federalpremium.com

20 rounds of .30 Super Carry HST hollow points are $38.99...but currently unavailable.

The only other offering is a 50-round box of full metal jacket for $33.99

    HOWEVER...

    9mm Luger choices include 124 or 147 grain Hydra-Shok for $31.99, 135 gr Hydra-Shok Deep for $35.99, and 147 gr HST for $37.99.

American Eagle FMJ is $24.99-$25.99 depending on bullet weight.

    ALSO...

380 Auto 85 grain Personal Defense Punch jacketed hollow points are available for $22.99

After watching his video, I would agree with Paul Harrell that .30 Super Carry is a step down in power and effectiveness.

This video shows the .30 Super Carry HST failing to expand in Clear gel after passing through a wood board.

Federal states that the .30 Super Carry is "Designed exclusively for defense."

If .30 Super Carry could match typical service calibers in FBI testing, then it would also be marketed to law enforcement, but it doesn't and it isn't.

I am not sure that I would see this as an indictment of the HST design.

The dynamic pressure acting upon the bullet (which is directly proportional to the density of the test medium) will be much lower in the clear ballistics gel crap than what would be produced in correctly prepared 10% ordnance gel. In this particular case, the clear ballistics gel crap Is unlikely to produce the correct pressure that would initiate and drive the expansion of the HST JHP. In other words, the problem lies with the clear ballistics gel, not with the HST design.

One advantage of choosing 9x19mm or other cartridges used by military and police is that proper testing is conducted regularly. There is greater incentive for manufacturers to maintain quality and strive for continuous improvement.

The 124 gr. 9mm HST expanded perfectly in the same block of gel that the .30 Super Carry failed to expand in twice.

I'd rather they went the other way (upwards) and split the difference between the 40S&W and the 9mm with a 0.375'' bore offering since it would likely have required a lower operating pressure to get ''service-caliber'' performance. Maybe Federal/ATK will do that next year.
    Agree 100%...

I think it's worth noting that the original Luger cartridge was .30 cal and was later changed to .35 cal because of people's fears over it being too small. I think this only validates the concept that you don't NEED 9mm to get great ballistics and the trend towards 5.7, 22 mag, etc. is the extension of this. I wouldn't carry those calibers generally but I would carry this .30 SC round happily, that's where it makes the most sense.
I would not want this caliber, I draw the line at 9mm. As has already been said, I don't like the idea of trying to squeeze more from a lesser caliber than 9mm.

Some more real world velocity data.

    3.1" Shield Plus barrel:

    https://www.shootingillustrated.com/...0-super-carry/

    5" 1911 Barrel

    https://www.shootingillustrated.com/...ry-ammunition/

Velocities are pretty solid, but its definitely downloaded from the original 50kpsi 100gr @ 1350fps spec.

Still, I'm curious how what handloads / Underwood will be capable of for a full house load from a 5".

I believe your first chart is the incorrect chart.

Thank you, I should have double checked before posting. By the time I saw you post the forum no longer allows me to edit my post.

This is the correct, 3.1" velocity chart:
