Thread: Federal's newish .30 Super, aka a 'spicier' 7.65x20mm Longue

“Many of those newcomers are looking for a self-defense pistol and the 30 Super Carry is an ideal choice, especially since it could be built on smaller, lighter pistol frames than 9mm without generating recoil or muzzle blast at levels that might intimidate new shooters."

So we’ve got a 50,000 psi cartridge with near-9mm energy levels and we’re going to put it in smaller, lighter pistols to make it easier for newcomers to shoot.

    Hmmmmm…..

    Tungsten slide? ;-)

Kind of an interesting question is how much mass is needed, and how much does it differ from a standard LCP?

    LCP II = 10.6oz

    KelTec PF9 = 12.6oz

    Diamondback DB9 = 13.4oz

    Kahr PM9 = 15.9oz

That said, theres little reason to suspect 30SC would be any lighter than these 9mm, they would just have the possibility of slimmer grips or having double stack mags of comparable thickness.

Realistically, I see this being much more of a 9mm competitor then .380 competitor, barring some real engineering wizardry.

Seems to me that a pistol designed for this cartridge would be like a “G19L” — have a relatively long barrel to take advantage of the pressure.

Sure there is. They call it Open.
Are there All-A shooters who would like added capacity? Probably not many.

I wonder what the capacity of the 30 Super Carry will be in the shorter mag or if it will even be offered.
12 round flush magazines in Smith & Wesson's M&P Shield Plus

The 30 Super Carry is an interesting cartridge, but will it be a perfect compromise or is it neither fish nor fowl?

The Ruger LCP Max 380 Auto is already pushing the limits of a modern pocket gun at around 15 ounces fully loaded.

However, the SIG Sauer P365 9mm Parabellum is already so small that there is a market for larger grip modules.

I don't know, maybe for some people but an airweight 5 shot S&W the quintessential pocket gun weighs 16oz empty. The nice thing about the 365 is that it is easy to change grip sizes for pocket carry with flush mag, to 12 rounder for full grip to 365X and XL modules for more grip and more sight radius, velocity and recoil mitigation and anything in between like Legos. Throw in the Wilson Combat and Boresight grip modules and it can suit almost any tastes or need. A 30SC version would just expand the versatility to new buyers and capacity focused folks.

This is a perfect example of why the 30 Super Carry may not meet sales expectations.

.32 H&R Magnum seems like a great idea in small revolvers. It has very low recoil, decent terminal ballistics, and six cartridges will fit in a J-frame cylinder. 327 Federal Magnum offers very good performance and six shots. Even the venerable 32 S&W Long was once considered an adequate police or self defense cartridge and is still widely available. However, 38 Special, 357 Magnum, and even 9x19mm revolvers outsell them.

It also seems to suggest that Federal will be putting the arm on the competition shooting rulebooks to allow 30SC as a competition cartridge. Thats unrelated to the 380 marketing but sure is interesting.
It is not even a subject of discussion, ".30 Super Carry" does not come up on a search at Benos.
