Thread: 4 inch GP100 .357 Shooting

  1. #51
Going to try a new bullet in the GP100. I cast around 100 of these this morning and loaded up 30. I seated them at the crimp groove and loaded them over 5.9 grains of True Blue.

This bullet is a Lee 125 grain FP.

So far everything I have loaded in this gun has shot pretty well.

I did have a little bit of an adventure while getting the bullets cast. I have a metal table outside on and I have been doing my casting on it. I went inside to wait for the lead to heat up and melt and when I went outside I saw this on my Lee drip-o-matic lead pot:

FWIW I set a Lee ingot mold under the spout of my drip-o-matic and it catches the escapees.

I have been using the same spoon that I add the sprue lead back into the pot.

The 125 grain Lee bullets did not group well in my GP100. They were several inches low (4-5) at 10ish yards and the group was much bigger than I got with the the 166s in 38 special brass and the 125 ACMEs in the 38 SC brass. I will try some these bullets in the SC brass soon.

Rugers in 38/357 have a tendency to favor 150-160 grain slugs. ! 158 FP or SWC will tighten that group right up.

Shot a 50 round group. 24 rounds at 7 yards and 26 at 10. Double action only.

Getting a little better. The practice with the DA shooting is definitely improving my shooting I shot a really good 15 round group (for me) with my Apex'ed M&P 9 at 10 yards.

I love that bullet. It is a very versatile mold; I have loaded it in .380 (got it to cycle ok but shot way high), .38 S&W, .38 spl, .357 mag and 9mmP (probably my favorite bullet for this caliber). I plan on playing around with it in a 9mm Largo Destroyer carbine at some point. I never shot them out of a GP100 though. That will change soon because I will be joining the club since I found a cheap used stainless 4" with Pachy Grippers on sale for $300 at a local pawn shop!

That is a great looking revolver you have! I was looking at the plain black thin Dawson front. I have an unmounted SDM gold bead that I was thinking about having installed in the middle of it.

That is a screaming deal on the GP100! Is it a fixed or adjustable version?

Right now my favorite bullet is the 166 SWC bullet, but I have a bunch more to cast and then try.

Adjustable. I wasn’t looking for it, but I had to grab it when I found it!
