Welding is my business and ill pitch in if needed..ive already had this exact idea in my head for years..shorten the grip frame and go single piece barrel cut to abour 1"...I'm regularly tig welding on firearms, last week I had a fun one adding to the ejector on a class3 sten. You'd have send it to my local smith, I don't believe there would be paperwork since I can bring my mobile Tig shop to his FFL. Picture a UPS truck with a fully climate controlled welding booth in back, I do a lot of injection mold repair for my customers right in their parking lot..sometimes toting a tig right up to their cnc and repairing little mistakes while still setup on the mill.
Send me a PM if your in need.
Oh and by the way Scandium welds beautiful.
Best you can get is the Thunderer 1873 models, which arent proper 1877s , and because they are 73 based, just overall larger than the 77, which IIRC was sized around .41 Colt.
I would love to see someone come out with some repros of the old S&W small frame top breaks in .38 short colt or .32 long , or the classic Bulldogs in .38 to .41 cal.
Just think they are a neglected and fascinating subject.
Is the serial number on the butt of the 340?
If so, I think that presents a complication in chopping the gripframe.
I wonder if cutting the bottom bar and relocating it upwards (if the serial is there) would be kosher.
I’m thinking that major surgery to lose 1-2 oz probably isn’t worth it.
This might just wind up being a training gun for my pocket carry.
When I get it I’ll weigh individual components and see what we can get.
I also wonder how much lighter I could get by drilling and skeletonizing some of the parts
