I also have thoughts of doing shotgun fiber as a makeshift guttersnipe optic.

The 342 is very similar to the 340 as you’d expect. There’s only 0.5oz of difference so essentially they’re the same. I hollowed out the insides of the aftermarket grips for a little less weight and this is what I have:
I feel like this is doable and would still be shootable in this configuration.
But for the Taurus, it’s not that much lighter… maybe 1.5 oz difference but it’ll be way less shootable.
So it’s not really a replacement for the J frame I think.
The advantage isn’t going to be the weight IMO as much as it’s going to be the size and shorter grip (which is what sticks out of pockets sometimes).
I tried grinding off excess sharp parts but only saved 0.04 oz so that’s not going to help.
I decided to try and cut weight out of the holster system.
I modified with heat and clipped with side cutters to make a slim profile trigger guard holster that doesn’t add width.
To get a comparison of size and weight perspective compare to an LCP Custom with pinky mag extension
So I can’t really get behind this gun based on weight savings over a 342…
But I think there’s an argument to be made for the shorter grip being more concealable in the top of a pocket.
If the serial number wasn’t on the bottom of the Smith, I think cutting the bottom of the frame off and possibly relocating it upwards would yield something essentially equivalent.
This is the Taurus compared with the 340PD in an Aholster I have been carrying…

With the weight difference between .22 and .38, you’ll never even get close. Polecat brought up a great point about aluminum cases. I never would have thought of that, though I’ve shot a few thousand CCI Blazer rounds in years past.
The real sticking point is the size of the j-frame vs NAA. There’s no way around that, though the view appears to get as close as possible.
What’s your impression of the view?

Even though it will never get close to a Pug, it’s way better of a self defense tool.
I think it will probably replace my pocket J frame as it’s smaller and lighter and I feel like I could use it to better success than an NAA.
I was impressed that it’s as small and light as an LCP which is kind of the gold standard of pocket carry.
I’ll have to put some rounds through it but I’m guessing I’ll actually carry it.
I think it would help this thread and of course the project immensely if you would post a video of you shooting the 340 without grips. I cou!d send the proper ammo.

Okay, I kind of love this.
Dang! You go Big _ _ _ _ s!, that’s like LAPD distances! What load where using. I still haven’t musterd the courage to touch mine off yet, but it may be this weekend as I am off the next five. Gonna take my little Thing 1 and Thing 2 shooting for their first time each on different days. I may try it!
I like the 25 yard distances to be able to tell sight POA/POI. The break seems really close to the grip because the grip is so small so it threw me a little.
I used Hornady Lite FTX.
In stock here.

It’s about as mild as you can get.
