I think this is a case where science really came up with a good insight. They've taken a useful drug and enlarged its circumference of potential ailments it can cure. And like it or not, we're hard up for a cure for Alzheimer's. You know what they say, an inch of prevention is worth a foot of cure (that's how that goes, right? I haven't taken my Viagra today).

I'm not sure it's a foot of cure but sometimes a scientific measurement isn't required for good results. You probably couldn't get a prescription but I'm pretty sure I could.
In the P-F basket of deplorables.

The data mining approach used in the study — looking at insurance claims — is an interesting way to look for patterns and correlations. There’s still a long way to go to show causation.

If I'm not mistaken, sildenafil was incidentally found to have benefits for erectile dysfunction.

Originally, sildenafil was used for (and still is used for) the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension.

My theory is a few dudes with heart problems noticed the uh...other effects...while they were getting treated.

It probably provides dilatory effects to certain brain vessels also thus increasing blood flow and reducing chronic micro vascular ischemic changes. I don’t really know the exact cerebrovascular pathology of Alzheimer’s but if I had to theorize I’d say more blood to the area is better than less in terms of reducing brain disease incidence of all types, except when trying to reduce ICP therapeutically.

I wouldn't be surprised. There are some who theorize that Alzheimer's is "type 3 diabetes" and that insulin resistance in the brain tissue is associated with dementia.

Given diabetes does effect erectile function significantly I don't have difficulty believing sildenafil might have some sort of effect for Alzheimer's patients.

Still, the idea of a bunch of delirious old dudes walking around sundowning on my floor with erections...that makes me think that maybe I should have studied accounting.

Exactly what we need in this day and time to add to the current circus. Old guys with boners probably naked roaming the streets like a herd of zombies. Cant wait till they crash the next peaceful protest. The girls will probably be happy to have some old guy do it right since they probably never get any except from a strap on or a soy boy.
    I'll wager you a PF dollar™ 😎

    Definitely.

I think it will be interesting to see if the plaque hypothesis gets walked back in the next few years. Especially in light of findings that will undoubtedly come with wide-spread proliferation of single-cell ATAC. Already seeing databases for combining those results - will take another couple of years for the informatics studies to catch up.

Could be wrong, but we'll see.
