Display size and shootability

I thought it might be helpful to have a thread that listed the display dimensions of the common pistol optics and have a discussion about display characteristics and shootability.

Here is a quick whack at dimensions, that I got from some Google searching. Feel free to correct and add to these. Subsequently, I have added the optic footprint.

By good fortune, we received a T&E sample of the Steiner “MPS” this morning, and I threw it on a G45MOS with a C&H ACRO plate. I’m confident any ACRO plate-Tango Down, B&T, etc would work. Just enough time for a rough zero at lunch, but will be running it over the next few weeks.
Subjective impression on view is that the MPS is at least equal to the ACRO. The rear outline of the MPS is rectangular, and the ACRO and Holosun 509T have arches at the top of the display; to my “mature” eyes it “seems” wider. Glass lens are excellent quality, and the 3.3moa(according to specs)dot bright and clear. Eight levels of brightness; 6 day/night, 2 for night vision. I bumped it down to “4”(from “6”) for sighting on indoor range. I think the highest would be perfectly adequate for snow in sun, day desert, etc..
If the MPS holds up, it is a definite contender. I would be comfortable with any of them after vetting for function. I just checked holster fit: on a G45MOS it fits a Safariland RDS holster, and rides well in my JMCK IWB.
I was informed by the Steiner rep that these T&E samples have the 13 hour “auto off”, but that can be disabled on production units. Not a big deal for me…

I just went ahead and multiplied the numbers to get lens areas (won’t be 100% accurate on lenses with arches or I used the formula for area of an ellipse for the SRO) but should help non math people like myself compare models a bit faster.

That is excellent! It also explains why, for example, I find an SRO so much easier to shoot than an Acro.

In the past, if you asked me what dimension was more important, height or width, I would have said height, due to seeing the dot in recoil. As I think about it now, I think width is more important, since the dot does comes down in recoil, but if it is lost, off to the side, it stays gone.

Correction--Romeo3 Max: 0.95"H

Romeo3 XL: 0.95"H x 1.26"W

Also, the Romeo3 Max/Romeo3 XL have a slight overhang in the front that means they may not always fit where an RTS2 fits. Hole pattern is the same, but the Sig sights are a touch longer.

I’m going to say it depends on the shooter, their index and their recoil control ability (and to some extent the gun).

On a carry optics gun I think I’d rather have height than width. For a frame mounted open gun or PCC I think I’d rather have width than height.
