San Francisco guard, a former cop, shot and killed protecting news crew covering a smash-and-grab
He was shot in the abdomen during an attempted robbery of KRON-TV’s camera equipment near downtown Oakland

A security guard has died after he was shot while he protected a San Francisco Bay Area television news crew covering a smash-and-grab theft, part of a rash of organized retail crime in the region.

"We are devastated by the loss of security guard and our friend, Kevin Nishita. Our deepest sympathy goes to Kevin’s wife, his children, his family, and to all his friends and colleagues," KRON-TV’s vice president and general manager, Jim Rose, said in a statement issued Saturday.

The former police officer was an armed guard for Star Protection Agency and provided security for many reporters in the region.

He was shot in the abdomen during an attempted robbery of KRON-TV’s camera equipment near downtown Oakland on Wednesday, police said.

The news crew was covering a recent robbery where a group of thieves broke in and stole from a clothing store.
A reward of $32,500 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest in Nishita’s killing.

"This senseless loss of life is due to yet another violent criminal act in the Bay Area. We hope that offering a reward will help lead to the arrest of those responsible so they can face justice for this terrible tragedy," Rose said.

The region has been struck by organized retail thefts in which bands of thieves, some carrying crowbars and hammers, break into high-end stores and snatch merchandise.

Similar thefts were reported in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills.

I only met Kevin Nishita once. He was receiving an award for good investigative work at the award dinner the local council of Lions puts on. By all accounts a good cop. RIP.

Never met Kevin. The initial bulletin that came out sparked a bit of panic in our office. One of our former Rangemasters has the same gig with another local station. Also an Asian male.

I have a feeling this is gonna change how the local TV crews manage their security going forward. Probably not in a good way.

Doubtful it'll change anything else they do.

No, you're there. Since it's management that sets the tone and management is safe back in the office, and in their toney Aptos compounds.

I have seen a few local reporters have a moment of enlightenment, however. They have almost universally left this local market for saner pastures afterward.

Haven’t they been targeted fairly regularly for their cameras and gear for a while now?

Are you thinking they’ll go to something along the lines of a “no resistance” policy?

Yes, it has happened a few times. And yes, I think they will adopt a "No Resistance" policy. Which will lead to several crews getting robbed in quick succession.....which will in turn lead to a major pullback from field reporting in certain areas. Just another stop on the road to oblivion.

Being San Francisco, perhaps the media would go this route, but sometimes media security can raise its own issues.

I don't even want to travel to SF, Seattle or Portland, let alone be on the job there. Hats off to those of you who can somehow get through the workweek.

    That's not media security.

Most stations here employ security firms that hire retired cops that are licensed by CA BSIS and fully-insured, etc. Not some dood they met at their local Antifa meeting who belongs to the John Brown Gun Club.
