So, how does the sizing run? When I see “regular “ fit in a base layer I think “oversized”. Large athletic fit in the Gucci brands (Patagonia, Arc) fits me perfectly but are priced kind of stupid.

Seems perfect to me, slightly athletic. Not oversized.

Looking at the website images, it looks like their shirts tend to run "long". I'm either a "L" or "XL" through the shoulders, but XL and sometimes even L shirts are too long for me.

From experience with an older gen shirt I have, yes. Go with an L, and be prepared to maybe/maybe not get it hemmed. If that still sounds worth the money, go for it.
