I presume you saw the invaluable information posted on Elden Carl’s blog, where he notes that when he was involved it was shot at 7 yards, with the exception of 1963, when it was moved up to 5 yards at his request.

There is confirmation elsewhere that the Leatherslap was shot at 7 yards the first year it took place.
