Sharpest horseshoe on the farm; Daughter forged her first knife!

As she has been growing up, I have tried to expose my daughter to everything I could think of with substance. From off-shore powerboat racing to horticulture, we are trying to give her a picture of what she can do with her future. She’s a teen now. So instead of tik-tok, etc, we watch YouTube videos together of everything from barrel racing and rodeo, to field-expedient first aid.

My daughter has been obsessed with the bladesmithing YouTube videos especially for the last year or two and has said she wanted to forge a sword. Vacationing in the Smokies of TN this week, we drove by a garage-sized smithy advertising the opportunity to get some experience. A staff smith ran the forge for her and held the tongs, but she ran the hammer and was able to do a bit of the grinding. Best money I’ve ever spent on a knife!

I think some handle scales made from deer or elk antlers would look pretty nice.

    Congrats on her work!

Great idea. We have plenty of deer antlers that we’ve found around the property.

Though I am a fan of things pithy...

...in this instance, try to find pieces that have less pith.

So you’re telling me not to pith away my opportunities?

That is awesome! As a dad myself who is trying hard to raise my boys with substance I can’t respect you more for this.

You are definitely the kind of folk we need at my flying/gun club
