It turned out great! I finished the guns already (see above).

I love learning and this was a ton of fun and good learning.
One of the things that helps me emotionally is that I am okay throwing anything for hobbies in the trash if need be.
It was like that for racing cars too. I started with Hondas for that reason and as income increased, so did the car budget but always with the thought that I had to stay within disposable budget.
These race guns were all bought used or very well used which took away some of the sting.
That is pretty cool. I love that you worked though an issue and still got the job done.

Onto gun #3!
This one is going to be my match gun so I “practiced” on the others.
With fresh Cobalt bits it took less than 10 min to do both holes.
Keys were: nice solid center punch. I used masking tape so the punch wouldn’t slip on the surface and gave it a firm tap.
Everything went super easy from there. Cobalt 1.5, 2.5 and 3.2mm bits with magic tap fluid and single passes on the drill press and done.
So easy now. The benefit of learning rather than farming it out is that now I can keep going with random projects I wouldn’t necessarily pay someone else to do…
Like putting spare frame mounted optics on airsoft guns and 22LR guns…
These are the three frames I drilled and tapped on the strong side.
First two came out pretty good.
Third came out perfect. And was super straightforward to do.
I’d have felt like an ass if I waited for a month for a gunsmith and then it took him a week to turn them around.

Had time to put together the third gun.
As an aside, I like to put things together myself because I can pay attention to subtle things that a hired hand would not.
Clocking of springs, attention to mating surfaces, multiple test fits and function checks. No assumptions and better problem solving if stuff goes wrong. And guns are way simpler than race cars!

Stepped up to the next project.
Making a Shadow 2 into a 22LR RFPO Steel Challenge gun. For sometime in the future when my kiddo gets into shooting sports.
I have a bunch of CZ optic mounts now.
Used masking tape, a punch, and the mount laid on top as a guide.
As opposed to the previous project where the mount was held in place by the other side screws, this mount is single sided so I decided to try it by being meticulous with my punch holes and lining up the drill bit extra carefully.
I went back to carbide but only used 2.5mm and larger to reduce breakage and made sure there was no side loading on the bit.
Worked great: punch, 2.5, 3.2 and ready to tap!
