I forgot about the 5906’s short reset until you mentioned it. They were sweet guns to shoot.

Hard to beat the 3rd Gen S&W autos. I have three right now. A 5906, a 6906 and a 3953 fill the stable. All of them have been ultra reliable and accurate. Can't think of much more I could ask of them.
I was knee deep in S&W autos during the 90s and had a 5906 for a while. I bought it as a $200 police trade-in. The gun was filthy when it arrived and I had to tear it completely down, and give it a good scrubbing.
It was a nice gun but I ended up selling it to get another 1911.
-Seconds Count. Misses Don't-
I went through a whole lot of 3rd gens from mid 00 to about 2015. Majority police trade ins. Probably 3 or 4 4506, about the same 5906, 5946, 4006, 4046, 4566, two or three 1006 and one 1026. All gone now, just one 5906 remains

Trooper224, That 5906 is certainly in nice condition. I've been a fan of the S&W semi-autos since the '60s, and had several 1st., 2nd., and 3rd. Gen guns. I had a production 5906 or two, and still have a couple of the PC versions. The 3rd. Gen. guns I've had all shared what is the most important attribute to me, functional reliability. This, with any of the many types of ammo I've tried in these guns.
We were in 3rd Gen 9mm Smiths from 1990-1998 with a sample size of 750 guns during that time. They were very reliable guns overall. We may have had an odd extractor break here and there. However, we did have several drawbars break, mainly on high volume shooters' guns (I broke a couple), which made the gun inoperable. I think I remember S&W redesigning that part to increase durability sometime around the early-mid 90s and they sent us a bunch. Although your gun is a later one and looks new I would grab one if you can find it, just in case. Other than that, and an occasional sear release lever needing replaced, I can't recall much ever going wrong with them.
Seeing that 5906 brings back memories. The first pistol I owned and fired was a 5906 just like that with the rounded trigger guard. I wish I still had it. It led to a PC 5906 and a PC 952-2 later in life and a couple of PC 945s.
Carried the 6906, 411 and 4506 as duty weapons. I wouldn't hesitate to carry one of them again. If the 4506 wasn't so expensive and mags were more available I'd get one for old times sake. Wait a minute.. I think GB is calling me....

I noticed this “punch mark” on the extractor of my 5906…
Maybe to note that the extractor or spring had been replaced? Or to test the hardness of the metal? I googled the serial prefix and it seems this specimen was made in ‘95 (based some posts in the Smith forum).
I’ve got 800 rounds of 9 on the way. First major ammo purchase I’ve made in more than year. Looking forward to shooting this bad boy. I’ll share some impressions.
And, yeah—4506-1 is on my list.
