Good Source for Historical USGI Garand?

My buddy has asked about how to get into a decent grade M1 Garand. I pointed him to the CMP in Anniston, but at first glance they seem to a only lower grade rifles, and they may even be shut down at the moment. Can ya’ll point me to a legit, non-Gun Broker source aside from the CMP? Looking for USGI issue that is shootable (not high volume, just occasional enjoyment/appreciation).

My understanding is that there is a wider selection at the stores - Anniston and Talladega are the ones I've bought rifles from.

Both times I've visited they had 1903's for sale, and they don't even list them on their CMP website. They certainly had field grade rifles available, which is probably where your buddy would want to focus based on the criteria listed.

You could also call the Anniston store and talk to one of the folks there, they are a pleasure to speak with and very helpful.

If you want to have a pretty enjoyable week and come away with a dead nuts accurate, nice looking Garand look into the CMP Advanced Maintenance Class. You'll build your own rifle in the class. Price largely depends on the receiver you pick. I built one to shoot so didn't pay extra for a rarer receiver. I'd have to look for sure, but off the top of may head I think mine cost $850.00 - new walnut stock, newly parkerized parts, new Criterion barrel - a lot of bang for the buck.

There are a lot of rifles trading hands on the CMP forums classified section http://forums.thecmp.org

Tends to be driven by collectors that know what they have, so if he’s looking for a good example they can be found there.
