Knock yourself out but not for me. I’m not a hipster and there are no practical advantages to 9x23 other than being rimless, which doesn’t matter in single stack mags.

The only reason I’d even bother with 38 Super is it’s the correct length to function properly in 1911s. It’s reasonably common, and at least some smaller ammo companies like Wilson load defensive ammo with modern Bullet designs. Power level is similar to +P 9mm which is fine.

I have more 38 Super 1911s in my safe that 45s. The 45 is still my favorite cartridge to shoot in a Government model, but 38 Super is fun and the guns run more reliably than 9mm. I wouldn't say 38 Super is a standout when it comes to accuracy though. In fact, I shoot my 45s better than my 38s.

Mostly Massad Ayoob talking. Essentially rehashing things/situations/guns he experienced literally decades ago, with some relevance today, but drastically in need of updating. His "lifesaving" trigger technique is a huge potential for ADs/lawsuits in my opinion, especially if used in a high stress situation (which is pretty much the only time you should be even thinking about it, I guess). Plus the physical manipulations necessary to utilize it seem situationally difficult.

I like my 1911s. I think they're still relevant, and may become even more so if in fact capacity restrictions come about. I do not necessarily endorse a 1911 being a novice's gun, but then again I also don't necessarily endorse the average striker-fired gun, without or with an external safety lever being a novice's gun either.

I wish Bill Wilson would have spoken up more and in greater detail on the video.

    Best, Jon

They make pretty damned good impromptu impact weapons.

More than a couple "You're not taking me to jail", "I am not going back to prison" and I won't be (fill in the blank)" fugtards, who had a difference of opinion about their future housing arrangements, in the pre Taser days and wanted to "bow up/knuckle up" or whatever, eventually ended up getting their channel changed with the judicial application of a 1911 upside the grape.

Glocks were a bit of a disappointment in the impact weapon department..

    So yeah, that's why.

While I would certainly prefer to keep my gun holstered these days if in another physical altercation, often things simply don't go as you want them to and you have to make do with the cards you are dealt. If that means picking up a rock and smacking someone with it, fine. If that means using my old 3# Colt as a club to bash someone, well, if it lets me win, then that works too.

Heavy old metal guns have been used for that purpose for a very long time.

My experience as well, when compared with L-frame revolvers.

Yeah, using a handgun as an impact tool is far from ideal, but shit happens sometimes.

I am saving up for when I can afford a new 1911, a fancy watch and an expensive car to go with the new pistol.

If I get another 1911, it will be a .38 Super.
