    A New Blade

I am a child of the 80s. I have watched various movies, good and bad, which featured swords. Swords like the one Conan used. Swords like the one Inigo used. Swords from every culture and not from any culture. And I have always wanted one.

What I actually know about using swords couldn’t fill a thimble: “The pointed end goes in the other man.”

The story that most inspired and moved me was not a movie, though: it was Shogun. So I have always wanted *this* sword.

I ordered a through-hardened 9260 blade from Cheness, an importer of Chinese-forged swords. It’s not a lot of things that would be cool but cost as much as a used car (anything made to traditional standards in Japan or the US). Instead, it cost more than a case of pre-COVID 9mm, but not quite as much as one costs today.

    I’m pretty excited about it.

I've never owned a real sword, @Duelist , closest I ever came was a Shin-Shinto period tanto blade in shirasaya which is believed to have been cut down from a wakizashi. I bought it years ago from an ABS master smith who was a collector of Japanese blades and with whom I was very friendly for some years.

I used to be mesmerized while studying the grain and pattern in the folded steel under good light. Truly amazing.

I gifted it to Jerry Halfrich, a friend and knife maker in San Marcos, TX. Jerry is of Japanese ancestry.

Old and poor images, but they are what I have:

Man I was entranced by the Shogun mini series as a kid.

    Nice blade. Enjoy it!

I think I would be partial to Conan now a days.

One of my kid's friends got POS "Aragorn" reproduction LOR sword off Craigslist cheap recently and dang if it wasn't actually pretty cool.

Be careful, swords tend to multiply.

How do these compare to Hanwei or Cold Steel Swords?

I didn’t watch it: I read the monster of a book, and at least one sequel.

My son bought a replica of “Sting”, and it’s pretty cool but not really much of a dagger. Told him not to swing it around b/c we don’t know how trustworthy the tang is. From what I understand, many display-type swords, especially fantasy swords, are not solid enough in the tang to take the stress of the swingweight of the blade, and will fail, slinging a sword blade off into whatever is in its path.
