Thread: Shotgun vs Pirates

    Shotgun vs Pirates

Pretty interesting video of a shotgun being used to dissuade some pirates from attacking a sailboat:

Apparently shotguns are the most 'universally legal' armament for boats abroad, and have been used against pirates on a few other occasions. Reportedly the spread of a shotgun also helps mitigate the challenging aiming issues of firing from a small boat thats bobbing on the sea while aiming at another boat thats bobbing up and down.

Another reason not to go on a cruise.

There doesn’t seem to be a lot of evidence that they were pirates at all. If they were, and were intent on boarding the sailboat, standing on deck and expending your ammo into the air shows your hand too much: “Hey guys, here is an opportunity to shoot the guy most likely to give you trouble when you try to board. Oh, and if you hit him with some 7.62, he’ll probably drop the shotgun into the water.”

As the saying goes, good luck reinforces bad tactics.

Agreed. Plus the back story given on The Derp Road is bullshit.

I’m not surprised, and I’ll take your word for it instead of soiling my browser history with that site.

I will presume they were "pirates" for purposes of this discussion.

    1. They heard you the first time
    2. Therefore stop wasting ammo
    3. Top off your shotgun much?
4 A bandoleer with more ammo to include some slugs/buck would be a good thing

I am glad it seemingly worked out.

PS-FWIW/I know a guy who did those anti pirate cruises in the gulf back in the day. He said the vast majority of the time, they (like most general predators as opposed to alpha predators) are hunting low hanging fruit. Well deployed fire hoses, the occasional gun shot and appropriate boat handling will generally save the day.

When sailing in pirate waters, one should be properly prepared.

Here is a vessel properly prepared for pirates.

I don't believe the video in the OP is from the story posted at the THR link. Events do not match.
