Thread: How Deadly are Shotguns?

  1. #31

And because I'm not disciplined enough to stop myself from going down the rabbit hole, go to 14:00 for GR's thoughts on the shotgun as a home defense weapon.

Typical Foster-style slugs have a habit of deforming/fragmenting and getting much shallower penetration than you'd think. Brennekes are a different animal entirely. Think of it like 45gr varmint bullets in 5.56 vs. a 75gr TSX or similar.

Soft lead Foster style slugs sometimes also turn into a giant doughnut of death... they expand, and the center of hollow point frags away. Giant lead parachutes tend to slow down faster. They still generally penetrate plenty, and I wouldn't want to be hit by one.

I bought a small pile of the Federal DPRS copper plated slugs a while back, for shooting through things that soft lead ones wont work well for.

In the Lost River House, there can be only one..

I have other shotguns, but nothing compares to John Moses Browning's finest shotgun.

It is the gun that was invented when we were still involved in the Indian Wars, and used in conflicts all over the globe. If I am going to grab a shotgun to defend the house and/or family, this is without question the one.

Garand thumb would not know anything about gunfights.

You would actually have to stop making videos long enough to deploy to know something about that..

I thought he had been deployed? And is currently serving?

I have multiple carbines and all of my combat experience is with a 14.5 m4a1. I still choose a 1301 for my house. If I only get one trigger pull, I want it to be 8 pellets through my aimpoint.

I think he is or was something in the Air Force. I don't know if he is medically retired or not. I have read in different places that he is/was an AF combat air controller or USAF SERE Specialist trainer. Please don't accuse him of stolen valor or anything like that, because I don't remember precisely what it was or where I read it. I don't know anything about him deploying or not deploying.

To be fair, in that video it was mostly Travis talking.

That would be a new development then finally.

The basis for my comment is this; while he has a loyal following online, and is charismatic, good looking and charming, etc, there are a number of people elsewhere that are less than impressed with him. Yes he is in the Air force. He has over 10 years in service He was an enlisted SERE instructor before going to OCS and is now a Forward Controller.

The heartburn that I (and more than a few others) have is that with far more than a decade in, he deliberately chose to never deploy. Not heard a single shot fired in anger.

There are guys all over the community that have deployment after deployment under their belts. Pretty much anyone who is going to be at a schoolhouse or teaching combat related subjects has actual combat experience, and generally lots of it. We have been involved in the GWOT for more than 2 decades now... How long can you avoid the fight, so you can make videos.

He got called out a few years back by some .mil guys who were watching some of his vids about speaking as an SME on "stacking bodies". He promptly put his proverbial tail his legs and calmed that shit down online.

In a small gathering of contractors and FAGs (former action guys) his name actually came up when ewe tube personalities were being discussed. We were actually talking about civilian gun people but he popped up, and I will just say that he was not well spoken of. The punchline was that he seemed more committed to advancing himself, and self promotion than serving his nation.

The suggestion was to stop LARPing/Cosplaying and go downrange and get some time actually doing what he had been teaching, so he might actually speak from a position of authority. As one dude said if I remember it exactly right.. " you put yourself out there as a gunfighter, dress like a gunfighter, act like a gunfighter, I don't know, maybe go do some gunfighter shit". I may not have quoted that exactly right, but its close.

There had also been more than one example brought up of guys who multiple deployments in the same year, and had been doing that for years. Plus guys who got severely injured, and were told that they were going to be relegated to training (at best) or retired. They fought back, saying "Nope, I am good", petitioning whoever needed petitioning, just so they could deploy again. Guys literally deploying after losing a leg, just so they could be with their Brothers.

So while I will give him credit for being charismatic and charming, I will not give him my respect. There are other guys with thousands of days on the ground, taking the fight to the enemy before coming back to work, teaching the lessons that they learned to the next generation of warfighters. Those guys are the guys who I will give my actual respect to.
