    Super 1050 high primer issue

    I’m running 9mm in a low mileage Super 1050 (less than 5000 rounds on it) and I can’s seem to get the primers flush. If I turn the adjustment screw in the toolhead clockwise to increase primer depth, the case gets pushed up into the shellplate at an angle so hard that it sticks in the shellplate. It sticks hard enough to damage the rim and causes the case to sometimes get crushed by the powder funnel. Backing off the primer depth screw enough to eliminate the shell binding issue brings back the high primers.

    I can’t get ahold of anyone at Dillon. Anyone experienced this before?

    Yes, as @dsa wrote, a primer support die can help. Also consider a needle bearing kit and a stiffer shell plate. These solved my high primer issues, but were not trivial to set up.

    Right on, thank you. I ordered all but the shell plate (OOS) and will see if I can get this thing to make usable ammo.

    Just to close the loop. TL/DR it worked.

    Before I started this threat all of my primers were seating high to various degrees even with the primer depth adjustment maxed out. At that adjustment, the pressure from the priming rod was enough to jam the shell diagonally in the toolhead and damage the rim. On a few occasions it was enough to completely mash the case through the shellplate. It was sort of similar to when a .380 case makes it through to the 9mm shellplate. About 25% of the primers were so high they would not chamber and lock up the gun (tried them in Glocks and a P320) when the primer would high center on the breechface. Some of the primer were visible angled in the case as well. I contacted Dillon and made their recommended adjustments with no joy. To be fair they recommended identifying what headstamps work/don't work but that's not consistent with my use case for the press. I need to be able to dump processed range brass into the press and crank out range ammo.

    Pursuing a fix as suggested above: The shell plate bearing kit arrived first and I installed it last night. I helped quite a bit to the point where I still had high primers, but not as bad. They were still seated enough that they would feed in the gun and shot well, but still 10% or so were too high by finger feel and culled into the beater ammo pile.

    The Everglades hold down die arrived today and it installed easily enough with a little tap into the toolhead. Adjustment was common sense, just screw the bolt down enough to support the case in the priming station. Viola, perfect primer seating depth every time without having to cull any. The seating depth is consistent, no angulation.

    Another downstream problem with the original situation was the cases jammed in the shellplate would have to be straightened out by the powder drop or crushed. I'm using the AA Academy MBF powder die which is important for not only belling the case but expanding it precisely to accept the powder-coated lead bullet. I didn't measure runout or anything, but I can't imagine that situation was/is good for consistent ammo. I'm looking forward to grouping the newest batch to see how it does.

    I actually did order the lvl10 spring loaded hold down die just because it looks interesting. I'll try it out when it gets here in a few days, but for now the inexpensive Everglades hold down and Reloading Innovations needle bearing kit seem to do the trick.

    Glad your priming is unfucked, @Super77. The LVL10 die is not easy to set up, and the instructions are not helpful. Go slow and figure out how it’s supposed to work. The spring compresses about 2mm. That’s all it needs. I had to trim the shaft with a cutoff wheel.
