Installed Wolff 23# recoil spring in Dan Wesson Specialist 10mm

I have my new pistol broken in at 350 rounds functioning fine. Been shooting 180 grain stuff at 1050-1165 FPS. My cases are ejecting 12-15 feet and reliably. I want test some hunting ammo that I will shoot at a deer this Fall. It dawned on me the slide will likely move rearward faster. It will be more energetic than the 180-1165 stuff (542 ft-lbs) but not 750 ft-lbs. Probably no more than 650 ft-lbs. I am a little shy about some of the Buffalo Bore stuff just thinking it’s not necessary. But I wanted to try a spring that might work well with the range type ammo I am shooting and something a little hotter. I received the Wolff 23# sling made for the Colt Delta Elite today. It is about 3/16” shorter but the wire diameter is about 0.007”larger (0.051” vs 0.044”). The cross sectional area of that wire is 34% larger so I expected it to be stiffer. Installed, the spring is applying more force and seems like more than 1#. Mine factory is used of course at 350 rounds. Seems like a high quality spring. Can’t wait to try it out. If anyone has experience with this spring I would be interested in what you think. I called Dan Wesson and while they won’t recommend anything but the factory supplied 22# spring, they said it won’t void the warranty and should be fine. Seems like a harmless substitution to me but won’t know until I try it. All I know is that if these fairly weak loads are ejecting 12-15 feet, anything hotter might be hard on the pistol. Staying with the stock 18# hammer spring. Just a pound heavier on the recoil spring.

I don't have a lot to offer on what will work in the DW but don't forget the mainspring in your equation.

Honestly, if Dan Wesson says don't worry about it, I would follow their recommendations and just replace springs a little more often when shooting the heavy loads.

That’s a good point. If I start getting cycling issues I will immediately put the factory 22# spring back. DW also said it would not invalidate their warranty to shoot the heavy and hot ammo although they wouldn’t suggest shooting it routinely. Since the warranty is limited to 5 years and I plan of leaving this pistol to one of my sons, I’m looking for the best solution that maximizes the life of the pistol. This small tweak will be interesting to see how it performs. I like the trigger. Im just expecting a slightly slower slide velocity which should be revealed with case ejection less than 12-15 feet. On paper I’m adding 1# of recoil spring resistance. If it runs the range ammo the same, I should be golden. That should be readily apparent. If not, I’ll test with hotter hunting ammo and it that runs fine I’ll just swap out accordingly.

I shot my DW Specialist in 10mm today with Wolff 23# spring. It ran great shooting the ammo I have been shooting; 180 grain at 1050 and 1165 ft/sec. As expected, the ejection distance was down to about 9-10 ft vs 12-15. So the slide slowed some and no failures of any kind. Next step is to find some more energetic hunting ammo and shoot it. The Wolff spring is rated 23# vs factory 22# (new), that had 350 rounds on it.
