Thread: 1911 Magazines-dimple on follower?

  1. #21
YES! When I read the Wilson 47Ds bypassed “controlled feed” that would concern me IF the extractor is snapping over the case rim. I have read and heard that the 1911 extractor is not designed like that compared to a push-feed (Beretta 92). My Wilson 47NX works great. The article made wonder IF my Dan Wesson extractor is snapping over the 10mm case rim? I agree the feed lips are not part of the follower. The feed lips on my WC 47NX are the same length as my factory (Metalform) DW magazines with round follower. Is there a concern with the “ loss of controlled feed” with WC mags? The article implied that if the slide is moving fast enough it wasn’t an issue. Is that because it doesn’t lose controlled feed OR the case is moving fast enough that it can’t jump out of the ejection port? I’m thinking they DO NOT lose controlled feed. What do you experienced guys think? The author was obviously manually cycling the cartridges and taking pictures to see how well the magazines.

I really don't know. It may be. My point was those two articles make the claim, but don't prove it.

The other point was, if Wilson mags lose controlled round feed, nearly every other 1911 mag, and all of the usual top rated 1911 mags, would also do the same thing, since they all use wadcutter feed lips which would be the source of a loss of controlled round feed, if it was an issue.

In general, it's not something I typically concern myself with. Everybody uses 1911 mags with wadcutter feed lips. Are they having problems with a loss of controlled round feed? My guess is no. If they were, they'd stop buying mags from Wilson, CMC, Tripp, ACT-Mag, Mec-Gar, etc., but they don't.

I agree. My Metalforms have same feed lips and were shipped with DW Specialists and work great.

As JTQ points out there's a ton of wadcutter feed lip mags out there. It they were turning a 1911 into push feed that would make the extractor snap over the rim, no? If so, wouldn't the carpet be covered with busted extractors? I would think so.

My sense is that they can increase the chances of the gun push feeding, but if your extractor has the proper geometry and deflection, it won't be an issue. Bill Wilson has argued that a 1911 should be able to push feed if it needs to, but that is not the usual method of feeding a round into the chamber, even with wadcutter feed lip mags.

I think I only own like two magazines with hybrid feed lips and dimpled followers.

They work. Just like my CMC PowerMags and Wilson ETM's. I prefer them for non-magwell guns because they're 7 rounders and fit flush, which I like for a CCW gun.

No kidding? I didn't know that. The data I have is that the extractor isn't designed to snap over the rim. But then I've had wrong data once or twice before. I know that in rifles, controlled feed extractors aren't designed for snap over. But of course there are exceptions, the 03A3 comes immediately to mind. And there is some space behind the 1911 extractor for it to move to starboard, maybe Wilson's correct.

I know the Ruger m77mk2 is designed to snap over the rim on rounds dropped in.
