    I'll be working in the Strider booth all this weekend at the BLADE Show.

    Most of the Strider tantos are designed to be pry tools versus self defense tools... They will work but the thicker wedge tips are not great at penetration without a lot of force applied, as compared to a thinner ground tip.
    Strider makes self defense blades but their Tanto models aren't normally aimed in that direction.

    I know it differs in grind, but puuko knives are extremely similar in shape to the traditional Japanese tanto. The fact that two cultures on opposite sides of the planet developed a dual purpose knife (for both utility use and as a weapon) of such similar form should be a clue that this blade style has some merit.

    Exactly so. I've written on that very subject and similarity in the past.
