Easy to shoot, cheaper to shoot, more capacity and with the right projectile, an effective self defense round:

Who would have thought that 2 rounds, the 9mm Luger developed in 1901, and the 45 ACP developed in 1904, would be among the most popular self-defense pistol rounds in the world, 120 years later.

It's mind boggling if you think about it; all the other ammunition developments that were introduced in that same time frame. Yes, they have rivals, 40 S&W, 357 Sig, for example, but never supplanted.

I feel that 40 dominated LE for quite awhile.

Even more curious when you realize that the 9x19 is pretty close to being a rimless 38 Special and that the 45 ACP is pretty close to being a rimless 45 Colt.

Well, the .45 ACP 1911 was specifically designed to be similar to the various .45 revolvers, 1873 -1909 but the 9mm - .38 similarity is weak. It was a good while before there were heavy 9mms and light .38s for the ballistics to be very close.

.38 Special dominated for a long, long time.

Yes, the 40 S&W was a bright star for a while. Launched by the FBI after the 9mm bullet failures in the Miami Massacre, American LE slavishly followed the them.

Not the 40 S&W is bad round at all, it's just not worlds better than what we had before, with effective bullets to be had in each now.

It's star is not shinning so brightly now, and even the vaunted FBI is back on the 9mm bandwagon.
