JCN’s take on modern fighting revolvers

All credit to my man @jetfire for coining this term.

I love the 686+ and it’s one of my most favorite revolvers and an excellent pick for a modern fighting revolver.

What if our mental math calculus shifted a little to making more capacity and reloading a priority? What if weight was more important than size for your personal carry balance?

What if I were bored and had too much time on my hands and a bunch of different revolvers....

A few years back, I did some ballistic testing and 357 Magnum out of a <2” barrel stinks.

9mm actually has better ammo selection and as good or better velocities out of barrels that short.

Over 2”, then 357 Magnum starts to shine.

I’m looking to my 327 Nightguard with 2.5” barrel as the basis of my “modern fighting revolver” build.

I can complete the 50 round FBI semiauto handgun COF with my 327 PC with 100% hits and staying under par times including the reload stages... but the sights stink and you can’t mount night sights or a red dot (the rear is part of the frame like in a J-frame).

So I think the 2.5” Nightguard might work for me with a little tweaking.

Here are some weights for reference:

The Scandium N-frames are decently light. Lighter than a P229.

Pretty comparable to a P01 in weight and size.

It’s lighter and not noticeably longer or taller than the 686. The cylinder is wider though.

It also has real sights and the ability to accept a red dot adapter.

So that’s the beginning of my “modern fighting revolver” build!

I have the Apex hammer coming later today and might see if I can swap over the Titanium moon clip cut 327PC cylinder into the Nightguard if the timing works out. Would love to have an 8 shot fighting revolver with easy moon clip reloads.

I have a 4” and a 2.5” 686 Plus. The shorter barrel was purchased two months ago, and replaced the 4” entirely. Weight isn’t a big deal for me, as I’ve spent a large portion of my life carrying MUCH more weight on my waist. The 7 rounds in the 686 Plus have also relegated my J frames to extremely rare pocket carry.

Yes, the nice thing about the scandium N frames is that they’re 8-shots. Esoteric, but a lot of handgun COF are based around 8 shots due to history with 1911s. I often like shooting pistol COF with revolvers!

If all semi-autos went away, I’d take the extra girth of an N frame for the extra round capacity.

I have an 8 shot 627, and have considered swapping in a shorter barrel. 686 barrels are easy to find, but I have found a 2.5”/3” barrel for the 627. I’m this close to ordering a 2.5” barrel for my 4” 686. It’s only $130 brand new, and whatever installation cost would be.
ETA: I’ve been carrying my 2.5” 686 in a DeSantis 3” holster for the past couple of weeks, so a 3” barrel is also a possibility for the 4” 686 swap.

Totally with you on that. I loved my 327PC but hated the crummy ballistics. Really wanted a 2.5-3” barrel but couldn’t find one. Thought about getting a TRR8 and cutting it down, but thought it’d be a waste.

Then one day I read an article about the discontinued 327 Nightguard and thought it sounded perfect!

Bought one off Gunbroker with a terrible trigger and never did anything with it until now.

EDIT: Ooooooh! Blue and white Santa delivered while I was writing the last post!
