So. Where does China stand in all this? I would have to believe they have some strong interests in the events and outcomes.
"Government is not reason, it is not eloquence, it is force; like fire, a troublesome servant and a fearful master"
They stand to gain if the west goes back to sanctioning Myanmar. Because it forces Myanmar to basically only do business with China and India again.
They already have been building inroads to Myanmar (literally). They want to get to the port at Akyab which will give them deep water access into the Indian Ocean. That port is already under development in a joint Burmese-Indian project.
Right now, the critical thing for Burma is to prevent the rise of radicalised Islam within the borders. Because if it becomes a breeding ground for Islamic Terrorists neither India nor China will be on board for economics. India, in particular, is not going to tolerate an Islamic threat on its eastern border.
Does this mean Ann-Margaret's not coming?
If Biden manages to send troops to Burma, I'll be deeply, deeply, amused.
Because it was while serving in a "Policing Capacity" in Burma that one Eric Blair, aka George Orwell, began to truly form his anti-totalitarian views and prompted him to write Animal Farm.
It seems only fitting that a hundred years later the west will be back to policing Burma with a quasi-totalitarian approach...
