Interesting numbers so far. It has been claimed, with some foundation, that forums are dying or dead - with the rise of current social media - because of age demographics. However, within the last week or two, after the banning & deplatforming, I've seen talk of forums resurrecting themselves.

Regardless, I'll be curious to see how things all work out.

This is a good point. I've always preferred forums because stuff like Reddit and Discord are basically just conversation. They're not as organized and searchable as a chronologically organized forum. Forums are great for small numbers of interested people to discuss and exchange information in a way that another person can follow at a later time.

The lack of organization is also why I hate “groups” on Facebook.
Reddit's gun subreddits are really just like Instagram (I think - I don't have Instagram). People are just there for the pictures. And based on those pictures, the knowledge base is fairly low. Also many, many posts of people building their 10th AR while saying they haven't shot in months because they have no ammo.

If you look back, there have been numerous incarnations of what is now being called "social media" from the genesis of the internet. It could probably be argued that "social media" has existed as long as written language has existed. If you think of it, cave drawings, Roman graffiti, "Killroy was here," email lists, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, are all just evolutions of similar needs to share streams of consciousness. Forums, OTOH, lend a form of structure and organization with the better ones having enforced standards and rules that allow for actual sharing of knowledge with a sort of permanence. Hopefully if forums do die out, it will be because they are replaced with something better and not razed like the library of Alexandrea. Sadly, history does tend to repeat itself.

While it's way off-topic, one of the better books I had to read when I went back to college was a compare/contrast between what was found in Pompei and social media as it existed in '10-'12. No doubt that we are using contemporary platforms to communicate in the ways we have all along. I was making reference to those who want to use FB & IG in place of traditional forums. That was all.

    I can pee outside.
Grad-ee-ated in 1982 from high school. Big 80's center parted hair,
Le-tigre shirts, parachute pants and all. Just turned 57 on Friday.

And to add, I get told by the Mrs. [of 28 years] that I act and say shit like a 15 year old.......

    That's just fine for me.

I don't know about all y'all, but I've been 25 for a while now and I intend to stay that way.

...Well, I guess that explains why it still exists.

    Fair enough.

BTW, isn't Silicon Valley located on a fault line? Not exactly a dormant volcano, but there is potential there for some more history repeating itself.
