Pro Sports Rant Redux (Warning: Salty Language)

I'd already written off the NBA and NFL due to the overwhelming number of low lives, skells and other miscreants of various stripes.

I was hoping to have a bit more latitude with my beloved hockey and baseball but it's getting harder by the day, and not simply due to being force fed the BLM party line.

But when a guy I respected, D.J. LeMahieu, is holding out for five years @ 21 million per, it's hard to hold on to that great team player, fan favorite, man of the people persona that he has developed and polished during his time with the Yankees.

All these pro athletes should wear this on the back of their uniforms as a reminder to the fans, most of whom will have been fortunate to have earned a million or two in total during their entire lifetimes:

There's nothing civil about this war.

    I hear you man!

Being a conservative, I'm all for capitalism, free markets, Etc.

However, there are two places where capitalism really seems to have screwed things up. 1, pro Sports and 2, The medical industry. There may be others but those are the two that I see on a regular basis.

I don't know how to fix them though, as every solution I've seen to anything basically involves switching over to socialism.

Free market. Thousands of kids go into college athletics, get crappy educations, suffer brain damage - all to entertain folks and raise funds for the college (which usually just go back to athletics). The vast majority have NO chance of being successful as pros. They are exploited but trying to make it big, a delusion.

So when one makes it and works for millionaires, probably will suffer all kinds of physical problems later - and wants his or her slice of the pie - go for it. It's a free market.

    1. Don't pay them
    2. Don't watch
    3. If you do watch, don't bitch about it. You made the choice to care about sports. You could watch a series about weird foods in China on Netflix or read a book.

Having had kids in my classes tell me about blinding headaches for two weeks from concussions, act out because they weren't socialized to get a real education, not be prepared in HS for real college - if one wants to demand more, spout his or her politics - JUST DON'T WATCH IT.

They have the same rights to demand whatever as tax evading corporate moguls.

I generally have no use for pro sports outside of MMA, boxing, and some racing. The rest can take a leap

I understand your frustration with the medical industry. But the solution is Capitalism, which is not present in our medical system due to long term government interference. The two areas of the medical industry which to not have government interference (read insurance) are Lasik eye surgery and cosmetic surgery. "Coincidentally", these are the only two areas of medical care with decreasing costs in spite of increasing technology and skill. Ask yourself why this is. Here's a few articles from people who understand this..

I know how the big 4 US sports are going to fix this: decreased revenues from no fans. The billionaires who run these franchises will make a business decision. As far as the players go, I encourage them to get as much as they can since their money making career is definitely finite. I'm in the medical industry and I can feel for the players. People who don't do my job says I make too much and that I'm part of the problem. Those same people start to make my job harder. Fuck that, I stand with the players.

If I were a pro athlete hell yes I'd hold out for as much money as realistically possible. My career could be gone tomorrow if I get in a bad car accident. Even if nothing bad ever happens i'll still be unemployed with zero relevant work experience by my early 30s simply due to aging.

I just started watching NFL games again during the shut down after about 30 years of better things to do. Watching some now due to winter weather and lack of other entertainment options. I played baseball in high school and generally love sports.

I don't watch sports live. I just pick up the 10 minute highlights on YT the day after the game thus avoiding the car, beer and insurance commercials. That won't pay the 10 million dollar contracts that some players have.

It will be interesting to see how much money can be made by an NFL quarterback in 3 years. Signing bonuses may be nothing more than a new car and free rent again.
In the P-F basket of deplorables.

If you are an actual practitioner - a doctor, a nurse, etc. I don't think most folks feel that way. I know I don't.

My loathing is for the system that allows bureaucrats to be paid more than most of the gifted surgeons (as an example) working for their institutions.

Also not a fan of doctor owned clinics which in turn own a hunk of the hospital and local health care equipment companies. In that respect there is no motivation to keep costs down. Because essentially, there is no competition.
