Nike, Coca-Cola, others reportedly lobbying against Uighur Chinese labor bill

Nike and Coca-Cola are among a number of companies seeking to water down a bill that would ban imports from a region of China where products are made through forced labor by minority Muslim groups being held in detention camps, according to a report.

The bill, called the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, would forbid the import of a variety of materials from the Xinjiang region of China, in an effort to crack down on human rights abuses, the New York Times reported on Sunday.

It passed the House in September by a 406-3 vote and has enough support to pass the Senate.

"More stringent measures are proposed by the Congressional-Executive Commission, whose bipartisan congressional leadership introduced legislation Wednesday (this is from March) that would prohibit the import of all goods produced or manufactured in Xinjiang except for those certified by U.S. customs as not tainted by forced labor. Importers would have to present customs officials with “clear and convincing evidence” that their supply chains were clean, a high standard. And the State Department would be required to report on products made with forced labor in Xinjiang as well as businesses that sold them in the United States."

To me this seems odd. We're OK with slave labor as long as you keep it isolated to one province and we don't import any goods from there? Not exactly the moral high ground.

But yes, I agree we should have sanctions in place preventing the importation of goods made from slave labor.

All these corporations are woke as long as they can keep the profits up. Easy to fly a BLM flag at corporate HQs while using slave labor across the world to keep the profits up.

Exactly. Let's see Apple devices made in America, by unions.

I'm sure Kaepernick will decline any further compensation from Nike until they come out against slavery abroad.

The fact that the matter (of slavery / slave labor) is up for debate shows how little we have progressed as a species.
There's nothing civil about this war.
