Years ago we had some friends over for lunch and served tamales. One individual who shall remain nameless had never eaten a tamale and proceeded to eat it without removing the corn husk. He had a very strange look on his face when he bit into it. I thought everyone knew what a tamale was and how to eat it. I was wrong. He should have said something.

I'm relatively new to 32 long and had to buy Starline brass, find bullets and dies. Powder isn't that easy either as it seems the case size puts it in a specialty category. What works in larger cases like 38 spl won't work in 32 long. Some of the best powder for 32 Long is no longer made. I tried 2400 from a published load and it sucked. Eventually I started a search and found a very old article that was useful. It mentioned IMR 7625 that I had. Great powder for 32L but discontinued. When that's gone I'll find something else.

RCBS has specialty cowboy dies for lead bullets. As that's all I shoot I ordered a set. Great dies for lead bullets.

    Sorry for the tamale drift.

You should be able to find loads using Unique, 231/HP38, and Bullseye. Any fast powder should be fine. It's not the smallest case I've loaded, 32ACP has that distinction.

What bullet weight and velocity are you looking for?

Alliant shows 1.8 grains of Bullseye under a 98-grain HBWC.

    Hodgdon's data for a 90-grain LSWC:

    Hodgdon Universal 0.314" 1.185" 2.4 777 8,800 CUP 2.7 844 10,200 CUP

    Hodgdon HP-38 0.314" 1.185" 2.1 744 9,100 CUP 2.4 831 11,300 CUP

    Hodgdon Trail Boss 0.314" 1.185" 1.5 599 5,900 CUP 2.0 730 8,100 CUP

    Hodgdon Titegroup 0.314" 1.185" 1.9 765 10,200 CUP 2.1 818 10,900 CUP

From Hornady's #7 manual, max loads with a 90-grain LSWC

    700-X: 1.9
HP-38: 1.9 (I think this is lighter than needed, see above)
    Bullseye: 2.0

    Green Dot: 2.2
    Unique: 2.5
    231: 2.5

    From Speer's #14, max loads
    90-grain LFP
    Titegroup: 2.5
    700-X: 2.5
    231: 2.7
    AA No. 2 Impr.: 2.6
    Bullseye: 2.3
    Red Dot: 2.3
    Nitro 100: 2.1

    98-grain LSWC:
    Viht 3N37: 3.7
    2400: 5.6
    AA No. 9: 5.7
    231: 2.7
    Universal: 3.0
    Bullseye: 2.3
    Unique: 2.8
    WSF: 2.8

Ideal Handbook, 40th Edition (copyright 1955)
    90-grain RNL
    Bullseye: 2.7
    Unique: 4.5

So, you were saying about available data...?

OK. Saving that also. I have a small amount of Bullseye and I'll load that next. One I haven't tried. By the time I get around to a new powder it will probably all be gone. I'm just fooling around with 32 L because I'm curious about the cartridge, not my EDC or anything.

I think my bullets are 98 or 100 gr Acme coated SWC. Gun is a 4" S&W 31-1, which is a J frame.

    Thanks.

Gotcha. I cast 120gr SWCs for my 32-20 and 32swl. Both are k-frames with longer barrels.

The link below may contain some useful info. If you go the the home page via the link at the bottom of the article that says “return to the back creek diary” you will find more articles on a variety of topics that are worth reading. I came across this site a few years ago and have enjoyed reading through them.

That was some great history. Thanks. I liked where he states that you can reload 32L cheaper than buying 22LR and it's a better small game cartridge. Now I'm curious. I'll have to break the cost down and compare. With todays prices for 22LR, loading 32L probably has it beat.
