Allegedly, there was a sailor relatively recently (last decade or so), who had “obtained” a cannonball from the USS Philadelphia, and was preparing to return it to the U.S., and donate it to the Marine Corps Museum in Quantico. Unfortunately for the museum, the cannonball had to be abandoned, along with the plan to return it stateside in short order as more pressing issues arose, and the cannonball was unnecessary dead weight impeding the timely addressing of the more pressing issues. Allegedly......... hard to tell what is a true story, and what is just a sea story these days.....

Warship Wednesday, March 31, 2021: NOLA by way of Brazil

Here we see the Elswick-built Chacabucu-class protected cruiser USS New Orleans (later CL-22) at Brooklyn Navy Yard in the 1900s. Prominently displayed is the cruiser’s elaborate stern decoration, which looks a lot like the Brazilian national emblem, and for good reason.

They’ve located the wreck of the USS Johnston from Taffy 3 who went down while fighting a Japanese task force consisting of 4 Battle Ships, 8 cruisers and 11 destroyers at the Battle off Samar.

There’s several other frustratingly short videos of the ship on that channel.

    Dang, that is a shame.

I do hope it can be recovered someday. I think that would be something pretty cool to have at Great Lakes for all the new recruits to gaze upon.

It is a shame. As I hear it, there were actually two cannonballs, one for museum use, one for his (or possibly her) private museum......... again, could just be a sea story....... 😉

Saw a comment today about HMS Glowworm on Twitter and looked for more of the story:

    https://www.hmsglowworm.org.uk/index.php?cmd=sip

The German captain actually wrote the British Admiralty via the Red Cross to recommend Glowworm's captain for the Victoria Cross. It is, apparently, the only Victoria Cross ever issued with the endorsement of the enemy...

That has been one of the pluses of covid is that it’s led a lot of museums to produce online content, which I think ultimately will drive more visitors to the museums, but gives those with limited time or budget to see what they have and throw some monetary support their way if they can.
