Seriously, the worst corrosion situation I've had to deal with was stainless and aluminum getting it on galvanically. I'm much better with needing to replace a $1 to $5 spring that gets rusty than with needing to replace a 7075 receiver that gets crusty.
Were not the original M16 receivers made of 6061 aluminum? They corroded in the humid jungles of Vietnam so were replaced by 7075 ?
Anyway, I work in a marine environment and stainless does rust and aluminum turns to powder. Salt water is just death to both metals.

My understanding is the receivers were always 7075. The receiver extensions were 6061, which led to galvanic corrosion of the 7075 lower where they were mated, so the extensions were changed to 7075. But I wasn't there, so that's just the say I've heard.

6061 definitely is far more corrosion resistant than 7075.
