Thread: Using Mean Radius to Measure Groups

  1. #1

Post Using Mean Radius to Measure Groups

TLG did a great post on using mean radius to measure group size: https://pistol-training.com/archives/6523

At the time, I mentioned an online shot group analyzer built by gunblogger Robb Allen that could be used to measure groups with mean radius. Robb is no longer blogging right now, and his shot group analyzer has gone away. However, we've rebuilt it and improved it over at Ammoman: https://www.ammoman.com/blog/sga/

    Enjoy.

Mean radius is way better information - this is always what I used for the magazine. I think the only reason it's not the standard is that it's harder to calculate; you pretty much need a program to do the work for you. Glancing at this one it looks pretty solid. Thanks for the link.
This is a thread where I built a boat I designed and which I very occasionally update with accounts of using it, which is really fun as long as I'm not driving over logs and blowing up the outboard.

Any chance you can offer this as an app?

Interesting idea. I'll throw it up against the wall and see if it sticks.

If you can, that's a huge win IMO: I would always photograph targets with my phone. I would do all the processing on my phone. The more I can do on a single device, the easier my life is.

I wanted to use OnTarget (https://ontargetshooting.com/) but per their FAQ page:
The OnTarget programs are designed to work on the Windows family of operating systems. The programs will not run on Mac OS, iOS, Android, or Linux platforms.

I'm often asked why I don't have versions of the OnTarget programs for other operating systems. Unfortunately crossing platforms is rather complicated because each platform requires a specialized set of tools and knowledge. I've spent the bulk of my career creating Windows desktop programs, and I don't have the tools or knowledge of the other platforms to create a quality application.
I went with BallisticX because it IS available for iOS, but it doesn’t show the group center or mean radius, and the UX is crappy.

If you were willing to actually measure the position of each hole, it would be pretty easy to enter it in a spreadsheet and do the calcs. But that's a lot more measurements than the one it takes to do "group size."

FWIW I just ran the link from FireFox on my Dell laptop desk machine running Linux Mint Tara. Seems to work?

    Thanks. That is pretty cool.

I can confirm that link seems to work fine on a Linux machine.

    Nice job!

The current version will work just dandy on a phone browser, BTW, but you will need a signal to reach our site, obviously. We tested it on multiple iPhone versions and a bunch of Android phones.

if you're still using a Treo, well, you're probably out of luck.
