FBI agent in Whitmer kidnap case arrested following domestic incident

    https://www.detroitnews.com/story/ne...sk/8013618002/
The arrest of an FBI agent credited with helping thwart a plot to kidnap and kill Gov. Gretchen Whitmer complicates one of the most closely watched cases of violent extremism that is becoming increasingly focused on allegations of wrongdoing by investigators.

FBI Special Agent Richard Trask, 39, of Kalamazoo, was charged Monday with assault with intent to do great bodily harm, less than murder following a domestic incident with his wife Sunday. He was released on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond following an arraignment in 8th District Court in Kalamazoo and faces a charge punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Of 14 people indicted, five (or more) were working as informants for the FBI.

As Revolver has noted, the five people who seem to be the FBI informants were also the people who seemed to have all the kidnapping ideas and access to all the equipment needed for a paramilitary assault on Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s vacation home. At one point, the leadership of the conspiracy met, and three of the five people in that discussion were FBI.

Outrageous government conduct? Never heard of it.

99% of the time, someone doesn't become an informant because they're a good person and want to help. The common saying is, "Today's informant, tomorrow's suspect (or defendant)." Again, not saying they were playing both sides, but there's just not enough information in that article to make a determination in this case.

But, FWIW, the are examples of other cases in the article that appear to be spot on.

Re: informants. In most criminal cases, especially narcotics cases, you are spot on about most informants working off charges and today’s informant.

However, terrorism / national security cases are a bit different. Remember the Bureau is both an LE agency and a (Counter) Intelligence agency. As such informants are also recruited based on access using traditional Intel methods I.e. using the traditional MICE formula: money, ideology, coercion, and ego.

They were all recruited mostly via ideology and ego, with a little money for their services. No coercion necessary. Communism was the threat it was because of the ideology. Most Cuban spies are recruited with ideology, as money is in short supply. The Soviets and later Russians are masters of the Honeypot, which is part of the coercion element if all else fails. Payments for services can also be coercive. Robert Hanssen was more ego driven than anything. Had to feel he was smarter than everyone else.

Whereas in this case, the FBI and their informants' cash and tangible support were the only things keeping this case going until they could setup their dramatic arrest.
