.223 rechambered to 300 BLK. Is it possible?

I have a Howa Mini .223. I only paid a few hundred bucks for it so if I modify it or render it useless no great loss.

I really like the rifle but maybe I could turn it into some I would like better, like 300 BLK. Can that rifle be converted to 300 BLK without a lot of expense, say 3-400? Will the action work for a 300 BLK. I would suspect it would have to have a new barrel but don't know if there is anything commercially available that would work. Custom barrel is probably too expensive.

I know very little about a conversion so any thoughts would be appreciated.

Ammo availability wouldn't be an issue.

I have not bought anything from these folks, it looks like it would work for you.

"Rechambering" it only changes the chamber, not the bore. If the barrel is thick enough, you might be able to get it re-bored and re-rifled, but my guess is that it would be easier and probably cheaper to get it re-barreled with a .30 caliber barrel and have it chambered for .300 BO...if the mini action would accept it.

The place linked by Flamingo is a DBA for Match Grade Machine, one of the handful of extremely reputable specialists in Contender barrels. They've been doing Savage and Remage barrels for awhile. Preferred Barrel Blanks is expanding that and spinning it off into a separate business unit.

FWIW, I've received excellent service and communication from MGM. Absolutely GTG IME.

On the other hand, your better option by far is to wait until you find a .300 BLK factory rifle in stock, buy it, and sell the one you have. PBB would be a good option if you wanted to do something not available from the factory, like .20 Vartarg, 6x45, .277 Wolverine, a 6.8 conversion, etc.

It would require a barrel swap.

The two chambers are the same, so you’d have to rebore. I’d just sell the .223 and get what you want.

Looks complicated. Probably just give it to a new shooter. I'm sure I could find one as I'm a member of a private range. Thanks for the links.

The 223 Tikka can be rebarreled to 300 BLK without modifying the action. I don't know if there will be any problem with the magazine.

There is actually a factory Howa Mini Action chambered in .300 BLK. It would be foolish to rebarrel to get there, as the cost of rebarreling is generally greater than the cost to just go buy a Howa Mini, and doesn't leave you with a second rifle chambered in .223.

Huh. I didn’t know they made a mini action like that.

    More things I didn’t know I needed.
