    Xx Holy Guacamole. Humble truth.

Since then I’ve conducted 11 handgun buy/sell transactions costing me approximately $4,000, and shot approximately 17,000 rounds in training, competition and classes. The guns included multiple types of S&W, HK, Walther, Glock and Sig Sauer. I have 140 hours of formal training. I am a beginner USPSA Production shooter, classified at 36%. I have two dark pin runs in Gabe Whites class and two runs, just over time. I have size M hands. I now only own a Glock 19 gen 5 for USPSA, a Glock 48 for carry, and a Ruger LCR revolver for walking the dog.

I only mention this all to give you a context for this comment: If I had to do this all over again, from a beginning, knowing nothing: I would go to the rental range and shoot either a Glock 48, a Glock 19 or a Glock 17 (depending on hand size). Then I’d buy the one I shoot best. I would then invest in good quality gear (holster, belt, mags, ear pro, eye pro, etc), and spend my budget for ammo on a 90% new brass-cased training FMJ / 10% self-defense ammo basis.

Then I’d try and get some good foundational training. I’d become familiar with the laws in my state concerning use of a handgun. I’d buy Tom Givens book, Fighting Smarter and read it cover to cover.

I’d become a Site Supporter of www.pistol-forum.com, and start a Training Journal to record my progress. I’d try and find a local competition club, either Steel Challenge, IDPA or USPSA; anything that puts you on the clock. I wouldn’t make any changes until I’d shot 1 to 2k of ammo.

    Good luck!

If you want to save some sheckles, the S&W SD9 has a pretty good reputation while not being worth a fortune. You can put some Apex parts in it and clean up the trigger pull.

You could also take a peek around your local gunshops, and see what they have available used in the brands recommended above.

I scored sequential 19.5s during this apocalypse at admittedly inflated prices here:

    https://grabagun.com/bsearch/result/?q=glock+19

The gen 5 goes in and out of stock.

    😳
Is that GrabaGun site legit? Prices there aren't cheap, but they do have a couple guns in stock!

Being a newb, Im leery of ordering firearms online. Especially since I wouldn't know a reliable site from a total sketchy or rip off one. But if this one is legitimate,.. I'm willing to give it a go.

@Chomps If you are remotely interested in a Glock, and like saving money, I highly recommend looking into the Glock Shooting Sports Foundation.

    http://www.gssfonline.com/

Here is the current GSSF price list:

If you opt to join as a new two-year member, you’ll receive a pistol purchase coupon to buy a Glock using the GSSF prices. If you don’t have a Glock Blue Label dealer convenient to you, GT Distributors in Austin Texas has a process to buy a Glock online and have it shipped to a local FFL dealer.

Actually, if I could find a blue label dealer with one in stock,.. I understand that until Veterans day, I could qualify for the Blue Label veterans appreciation deal. Just need to show my DD214. I think the gun range I've been going to
Is a blue label dealer. Just don't know if theyve got the Glock19 5 gen in stock. And their prices are HIGH to begin with.

Im @ work right now so I'll have to look into it in detail later. But appreciate the heads up. 👍🏻

Understandable. Grabagun is legit. I've ordered several guns from them. Add a gun to your cart then go to checkout. There should be a button or link for "Choose FFL dealer". Click it and find one near you. They ship it there and that's where you go to pick it up. You might want to email the pick-up dealer as a courtesy. It's clunky the first time you do it but you'll get used to it.

@Chomps, you've experienced an unreliable gun and want to avoid buying another one. I've been in the same boat a few times, and here's how I approach the problem.

I do not buy new designs for serious use (e.g. life safety equipment). I go with well-vetted, proven guns.

I do not buy guns from companies that have shitty QC or poor engineering. All it takes is one example, and I'm highly suspicious of the whole product line. So if I were in your shoes, I wouldn't buy another Springfield unless I was really confident it was well designed and reliable. Based on my own experience, I do not buy Smith & Wessons, Sigs, or 1911/2011s of any brand.

This approach really doesn't leave a lot of options. Here are three:

    1. Glock in 9mm
    2. HK in any caliber
    3. CZ P-07 or P-01 in 9mm. (Also, the P-10 looks like it's good to go).

    Go with 1.

Chomps, I'm a veteran of the gun-of-the-month club and I can tell you RJ has done his homework. Try to find a G19.5 at the best price you can. I have yet to meet anyone who was disappointed in a G19. You will be the owner of a maximum capacity handgun in a very concealable size that is silly accurate with unequalled after market support.
