A person was arrested on suspicion of shooting a court security officer during a drive-by shooting outside the Sandra Day O'Connor U.S. Courthouse in downtown Phoenix on Tuesday morning.

Officials said the individual shot the security officer shortly after 11:30 a.m. outside the courthouse, located at the corner of Washington Street and Fourth Avenue, before fleeing the area.

Sgt. Ann Justus, a Phoenix Police Department spokesperson, said the officer was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Justus did not identify the officer.

Washington Street was blocked off from Fourth to Fifth avenues as police and firefighters swarmed the scene.

Police eventually located the suspect's car near Ninth and Polk streets, more than a mile northeast.

Jill McCabe, an FBI Phoenix spokesperson, told The Arizona Republic shortly after 2 p.m. that the shooting suspect was arrested and there was no longer a threat to the public.

Polk Street was still closed between Ninth and 11th streets after the arrest as K-9 units sniffed vehicles parked along the road.

McCabe did not provide additional information, such as the suspect's identity or details about where and how that person was arrested, as of Tuesday afternoon.

Anyone with information about the shooting was encouraged to contact the FBI Phoenix at 623-466-1999 or online at tips.fbi.gov.
Sounds like their armor did its job.

Several years back there was an attempted active shooter at the Federal Courthouse in Las Vegas. He killed the first CSO who had no ballistic protection and was quickly shot by responding CSO's. This event really caused them to revamp what they're doing and make vests mandatory.

At least one news report I saw yesterday indicated the officer (who was referred to as a US Marshal in the story) got some rounds off at the shooter as well.

The court security officers (CSOs) are contractors but are usually sworn in a special deputy US Marshals. That authority may be limited to on duty or at the courthouse but I’m not 100% on that. AFAIK they are all retired LEOs.

Carr, according to investigators, was found at the park, wearing a full suit, dress shoes, a fedora hat, with a revolver and a rifle next to him. According to Buford, Carr told him that he had snapped and shot a security guard because the guard was harassing him.
Well, at least he’s got style....

And now it looks like two assholes ambushed a gaggle of DPS troopers with a rifle. One in custody, one still on the loose.
