    Week 386: 99 Drill

    Week 386: 99 Drill

Results may be posted until September 21st, 2020.

    Designed by: JodyH
    Range: 7-15 yards
Target: 3x5 or 4x6 card, see below for details
Start Position: holstered, hands relaxed at sides, see below for details
    Rounds Fired: 99

This was developed as a way to practice fundamentals (marksmanship at speed, draws, and reloads) with limited time and ammunition, using a repetitive "block training" format.

7 yards, 2.5sec PAR: draw and shoot three (10 times, total 30 rounds)
7 yards, 5.0sec PAR: draw, fire one, reload, fire two (10 times, total 30 rounds)
10 yards, 3.5sec PAR: draw and shoot three (10 times, total 30 rounds)
15 yards, 5.0sec PAR: draw and shoot three (3 times, total 9 rounds)

Either 4×6″ or 3×5″ cards can be used as targets. The 3×5 version is obviously significantly more difficult. All shots must be fired before the end of the PAR time; shots fired after the PAR count as misses.

The PAR times are based on running the drill from concealment or a legitimate retention holster. If you want to use an open top style range/competition holster, deduct one half second from the PAR for each string draw string and one second for the draw & reload string (2.0, 4.0, 3.0, and 4.5). If your range does not allow drawing from a holster, reduce the PAR for each string of fire by one second (so 1.5, 4.0, 2.5, and 4.0) and shoot it from a ready position.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Equipment used (pistol, holster, optional concealment garment if one was used)
    Target used
Score for each of the four strings of fire
    Total score
    Anything you noticed

Conserving ammo so this was all I shot for this week. (other than rimfire)

Equipment was a Sig 365XL with 507K from a Fricke OWB holster under an unbuttoned camp type shirt.

Target was the top torso 3X5 on a MSP target. (yes a waste of a target but didn't realize I was out of 3X5 cards.)

I shot the drill clean but on stage 1 I was over the par time with my last shot roughly half the time. At the farther distances with longer PAR times I was finishing with plenty of time. What this tells me is that I am still taking too long to refine my sight picture at closer distances. This seems to be an ongoing issue with me and really need to find a way to overcome this.

I love the 99 drill and have been periodically running and tracking it since 2015. For years today's score would've been a pr, as it was a 278 for years. But last year, before the baby I was arguably at my peak performance in my shooting career, I put down a 90 with the same gun running irons. So this was a better than average run, normally in the mid 60's. I like that you get several repititions, which allows you to see/feel issues and fix them in subsequent runs and build consistency.

For instance, today I noticed that I wasn't completing my support hand grip and keeping consistent pressure during the 7 yard portion. So I made a point to focus on chopping my support hand into place and completing the grip prior to extension, with a focus on maintaining that pressure throughout the string of fire. I tightened up and dropped far fewer points, going forward, though at least some of that is because of the relaxed pars that are in my ability without a ton of effort.

The 2.5 at 7 shouldn't be particularly hard - 1.5 draw and .5 splits should get it - but I consistently fail to prep the trigger and end up smashing through the takeup and into the wall, which combined with a bit of anticipation, pulls the dot right down off the card. The dot is great for letting me see this happen. Took a minute for me to let it sink in and apply the fix unfortunately.

I've yet to clean the 2nd and 3rd strings but I can feel it right at the edge of my grasp. I just need to not let stupid mistakes and careless get in my way. Happy with a clean run at 15, especially considering the time.

I recently traded into a Shadow 2 and said F-it...why not, I'll throw the light on and run it from concealment and see what i can do. First day out with it. It's weird drawing such a heavy gun, I'm very slow driving it to the target. It has thin Bogies on it and they are very rough, I will eventually try some palmswell loks. Super smooth trigger. Surprisingly, I felt like the gun was pushing me around. Turns out that the heavy gun was very steady and I got lax in my support hand grip. Once I tightened it up at the 10 I nearly cleaned the last half until I mentioned it and jynxed myself. The score is average for me. I think with a dedicated holster and more time with it I could shoot it up to my potential. Very cool gun and while a 67 is slightly less than my average this year, it's the first time I've ran this on a 3x5 in a long time. Certainly a fun way to get familiar and break in a gun. Love the 99 drill.

ps surprised to struggle with the pars on many runs where generally only the first run is ever a tight time constraint.

    target - 3x5

    Total score - 86

    d3 @ 7 times - low (2.29) high (2.47) 29/30 points all under par

    1r2 @ 7 times - low (4.36) high (7.01 magpul mag issue, otherwise 4.94) 26 points all but 1 under par

    d3 @10 times - low (2.77) high (3.64) 23 points all under except the 3.64 run

    d3 @ 15 times - 4.86 (-1), 4.26 (clean), 3.52 (clean)

My pr is still 90 but that's for the 4x6 version, though with irons. Between dots and being a generally better shooter, even on a 3x5 it felt like the times weren't much of a reach. The 29/30 on the first string is the best I've done there historically, despite the harder target. I had a magpul mag continually lock back early on one string which was 2 of the 4 points down on the reload section. At 10 I wasn't giving enough respect to the proper amount of trigger prep/control necessary and slapped a few and anticipated a few. There if I got lax on any aspect of the grip or trigger then i dropped a shot. The par wasn't an issue unless i went artifically slow on the one run and still didn't clean it. At 15 it was just a matter of giving appropriate amounts of trigger while gripping the gun as intended (duh!!) and only dropped one shot.

Still love running this and it's nice to see that the 3x5 version is no longer seemingly unreachable. The last time I ran it was an 88 but on a modified version of the larger target so this is certain progress. Probably my favorite way to spend 100 rounds on a single drill.

    d3 @7 2.5 par

    1r2 @ 7 5 par

    d3 @ 10 3.5 par

    d3 @ 15 5 par
