I don't have any particular knowledge in this, but I would think that hand-stamping an anodized aluminum lower would be a bad idea and turn out poorly, if not damage your receiver. Those lowers are usually roll-marked with hydraulic presses that isolate the piece from front and back, prior to anodizing while they're still raw.
"Are you ready? Okay. Let's roll."- Last words of Todd Beamer
Those punches will easily reach the necessary engraving depth, which is > 0.003”.
Machinists have been stamping crooked part numbers on things since the beginning of time. It is not that easy to keep the spacing and depth consistent and the marking straight. If you do it, pack the cavity (magwell for instance) behind where you are stamping solid. Since you already have the costs of the lower and the stamp into this, the last thing I’d want to do is bend or crack the lower.
I had my lower laser engraved - I suspect most people are going this route too. I also remember reading people using electric engraving pens?
For the cost of sending off a lower to get marked I don't see why you want to mess with punches... unless you have like 10 lowers you wanted to get marked.
I picked up a set of quality, US-made old used letter stamps off fleabay for that purpose. Saw my buddies lower engraved by a local laser shop and changed my mind. Given the sunk costs in an engraved lower and the fact that it's basically a lifetime investment, it's worth the $60 to me to have it done perfectly.
