Here’s some thoughts and answers to posts in no particular order.

Colt was never seriously in the running. Maybe they’ve turned their QC and customer service around but anytime I looked at one I just couldn’t get past the threads of disappointment I’ve seen over the years. Yes, everyone puts out a clunker on occasion but I just couldn’t get a warm, fuzzy when I looked at them.

The Vigil frame is forged aluminum but I’m OK with that for a 9mm.

I saw that Specialist on Addicts before I posted this thread. I agree it’s a deal and if it was blued this would have been a “Lookie what I done got!” thread instead.

A DW or TRP were the favorites before I posted this thread and it looks like the general consensus is they are worth the extra money. I’m 30-60 days from having some personal business wrapped up so maybe I can swing both in the near future.

This past week on the addicts, there was a Les Baer Thunder ranch, a Les Baer PII, and a Wiley clapp worked over by NH, all were under $1550.

Just a thought, buying an expensive fun gun in this market seems foolish. I'd wait for things to get more reasonable. Everything is selling for a lot more than it does in normal times. Some of the normally expensive stuff is selling for a LOT more. Why buy high?

It really does sound good but after someone pointed out the rear sight overhang I can’t unsee it. I think I’d try for an Aficionado before the VMC.

A very good and fair point and something that’s stopped me from several impulse purchases lately. My concern is if things go wrong in November, prices will really go into a frenzy and I’ll be wishing I’d jumped too soon instead of too late. That’s just my personality in action though.

I’m going to be contrarian and say avoid pre-owned 1911s unless you want a project gun. Chances are there is a reason someone is selling it. Either that or it’s WECSOG’d bad.

At the $1100 mark, you’re in a really weird price point. You’re over the “meh” range but short of the “okay” range. I’d say if you only had $1100 to spend, get a Ruger and spend the rest on magazines and some DIY upgrades and learn to ‘smith it. This is something you’ll want to learn how to do if you plan on using it a lot.

Slightly better, is the Colt Competition which comes in under $900 (or used to).

The best advice I have is to save up a few more pennies and get a Springfield TRP (good value), or Colt M45A1/CCU.

a buddy was selling a railed TRP locally for 1100. I did not need it, so I turned it on to a co-worker.

He bought it and when I saw it, it looked brand new and was seriously tight for a production piece.

he got a deal. look hard for a nice used TRP.

    This isn't a 1911, but then again, it isn't a 1911.

If one has bought a few guns over the years then one is bound to run into a lemon. I had a lemon HK USP .45c years ago that I sent back for work. It came back with the same issue. I've owned two Springfields and both had to go back. To their everlasting credit SA took them back no questions and they returned working perfectly. All my Colts have been good, same for CZ, Beretta and SIG.

Very much all this. You CAN NOT get a better value than the Colt Wiley Clapp Government for $1K-1200. I’ve had Colt, DW, and a RO and all three have been wonderful examples of the 1911. And I’ve had a SIG too. I still have the Colt and DW. (In .45 and 9mm, respectively)
