    Carbine class mag pouches

Ive got a carbine class coming up in a few months (my first in years) and I'm looking for recommendations for a couple of belt mount rifle mag pouches. No "Battle Belt" for me, but my regular EDC belt.

Last class I took I used a chest rig, but its not really realistic for me and how I'd likely deploy a rifle.

Prefer something kydex but would entertain nylon too. I didn't see that JMCK or DSG had what I was looking for. Ravens pancake style are bigger than I'd prefer and Taco's dont seem readily belt mountable.

Safarilands 774's seem very much like what I had in mind. If they are good I'll just roll with them.

    Thanks!

I've used these during several classes and found them sturdy, easy to use and have good retention. They can be removed or placed without removing the belt.
I use a vertical on my left side (right handed) and one horizontal behind my left hip. Worn on a Wilderness Instructor belt.

I've been very pleased with these from Wilder Tactical:

    They have other configurations available.

    Which class are you taking?
I had an ER nurse in a class. I noticed she kept taking all head shots. Her response when asked why, "'I've seen too many people who have been shot in the chest putting up a fight in the ER." Point taken.

I have run the V1 drop leg rig in several Suarez International rifle classes and loved it. it puts the top of the mags at the top of belt level. Not too low or too high. The single leg strap kept the sub load from shifting during movement and reloads. The tacos also can be used for AK mags as well. I have run both ARs and AKs with this set up with great success. Add a dump pouch and your pistol holster, and you are good to go!

I am a fan of the 774s you mentioned. I prefer the Blade Tech tech lock to the Safariland version of the belt mount, however.

I found out that the Taco mag carrier needs a G Code belt loop plate, above. Shield like piece attaches to the belt loops on one side and to the two loop straps you get on the other. So now you can adjust the angle between the pouch and the belt loops. In my case, being right handed, the mag openings cant back from the centerline such that the mag won't set upright but will angle back. I find yanking the mag out "beer can" style, it's easier on the wrists if the mag body is already halfway going in the right direction.

I like these as they are relatively inexpensive, have good retention, and allow for easy insertion.

Just get molle buckles and you can use them on a belt or molle.

I have used 774s extensively and they are absolutely good to go. Safariland kydex has always been good and intelligently designed. I bought some raven ones because of glowing reviews but the 774s are clearly better, the one advantage of the ravens is that they are slightly lower profile by maybe less than a 1/4th inch. They also work with standard tek lok or the safariland knock off version.

An additional benefit to the 774s is that you can double stack them with safariland attachment screws since they have the 3 holes standard pattern on each side.

Most can be had amazon prime for less than 30 shipped.

How many are you expected to have on your person at a time?

Chest rigs aren’t really about “this is how I’m going to *fight*” but are about making your time on the line easier in high volume classes. Your rifle gunfight probably isn’t going to involve a belt pouch either, or a reload at all for that matter. In class, speed/emergency reloads are from the belt, admin reloads from the chest, and back-feed the belt from the chest.

The Ready Tactical kydex AR mag pouch has been my go to for... I dunno ten or fifteen years?

Combine one, maybe two, of those on a belt and a chest rig to hold the rest and you’re more than good.
Does the above offend? If you have paid to be here, you can click here to put it in context.

Concur with Rob et al on using the belt pouch as primary and refilling it from chest rig. I prefer a rigid pouch...I've been pretty happy with Blade Tech's pouch, which comes with a Tek Lok attached. It's a little bulky.
