India did just buy about 150,000 slightly modified 716i rifles over the last two years. The only meaningful difference is the Indian rifles have a pic rail at 12 and 6 o’clock. Take their procurement as whatever kind of endorsement as you want.
I have a Sig 516 which I have been nothing but happy with. It has been very reliable, accurate, and is well built. The 716 is just a upsized version. I had planned on going with the 716 when I bought my 762 AR but the weight of the 716 and the hand guard made me look at and ultimately purchase a PWS. The new 716s come with much better hand guards today. Based on my experience with the 516 - I would be fine advising someone to go with a 716.
Keep in mind the 716i is DI while the older 716 guns and the 516 guns are piston driven.
