The Texas DPS already issues the full sized 320. They are now transitioning to ones with red dots mounted. They have to get new pistols, because their current ones have their logo where the red dot goes. IIRC, they will be black and not have a manual safety.

As far as I know, DPS has not had any instances of uncommanded discharge as of yet (knock on wood)
3k ish troopers, 600 ish CID and 166 rangers. So about 3500 gun carriers for TX DPS.

Texas DPS went from revolvers to the Sig P220 .45. After several incidents were 45 ACP did poorly penetrating vehicles. Dps went to the P226 in 357 originally DA/SA then DAK.

About 10 years ago, DPS made the decision to drop 357SIG and go 9 mm. They initially transitioned to the Smith & Wesson, M&P without any real testing process. The initial rollout Was an unmitigated disaster and resulted in some folks, retiring, in lieu of, being fired and or prosecuted. DPS then conducted a very fair comprehensive and open testing process that resulted in three guns passing, the G17 Gen 4, the VP9 and the 320.

After being burned by Smith & Wesson, going back to SIG, who had served DPS well for nearly 30 years was an obvious choice.

As far as I know, DPS has not had or at least has not acknowledged having any uncommitted discharges with the 320.

"NEWINGTON, N.H., (April 16, 2025) – SIG SAUER, Inc. is proud to announce the Texas Department of Public Safety (TXDPS) is transitioning all their troopers to the SIG M17 pistol with a SIG ROMEO-M17 red dot optic.

We are proud the Texas DPS chose the SIG M17 as its official sidearm,” began Tom Jankiewicz, Executive Vice President, Law Enforcement Sales for SIG SAUER, Inc. “Having selected the ROMEO-M17 red dot optic, TXDPS conducted an exhaustive testing process, firing thousands upon thousands of rounds, and concluded that the SIG ROMEO-M17, optimized with the SIG M17 pistols, was the clear choice for their agency.”

I'm not LEO, obviously, but I was curious how many officers this might be. Could one of our Tejas-familiar members estimate the rough size of this order for the DPS? All I found so far was a general description of TX DPS here:

"The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is responsible for statewide law enforcement functions in Texas, including highway enforcement, combating gangs and drug cartels, investigating public corruption, apprehending fugitives, and solving serial criminal cases."

I tried one of those AI-sourced answers and got this, but I don't know if it's accurate:

"The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has approximately 2,802 authorized troopers as part of the Texas Highway Patrol division. Additionally, the Criminal Investigations Division consists of 700 members, including 573 commissioned officers."

Also FWIW, the M17 variant they are getting is Black, pictured below

I was told OHP has pulled the 320’s out of service this week too.

Edit: As of right now, I can’t find anything official.
