Big Ol' Black Bear in the Road

Just back from next to last walk for the evening with the dog. I have to use a headlamp at night as we have no light but for what emanates from the local homes in our wooded subdivision.

Got 100 yards or so from the house and I noticed a pair of glowing eyes about 100 feet away swinging back and forth as the bear tried to make us out.

Alrighty then, time to turn and head back home before Skyler decides to issue a challenge.

Bear continued toward us a bit as we headed back but did not woof or bluff charge, so no harm no foul. Had a J frame and some POM spray with me, glad neither one was required. (Not that I'd have much confidence in either one under adverse circumstances.)
There's nothing civil about this war.

Hopefully that J frame did not have a front sight on it.
Likes pretty much everything in every caliber.

Try a Toyota Camry next time instead of the J frame.

Don't ask me how I know.

    That's a good idea. I wouldn't want to mess up my 4Runner.

(Note to self: hot wire someone's Camry.)

We get plenty of bear around here...I used to get them on my deck years ago when I still had feeders. But I only have the occasional nighttime visitation on the property or down the road.

I've had tons of bear encounters over the years, including being pawed (not clawed) by one in Yosemite in 1975.

Sounds like @blues is a good candidate for the PDW Club.

I think my 870 is the only firearm I own currently I'd have confidence in.

    Yogi after your pic-a-nic basket?
Sounds like it could be a good story!

I've got several trail cam pics of them around here, but my one and only personal encounter was in the NE part of the state and the Camry (wife's car) managed to take out an entire family at once.

I absolutely do not want my dogs tangling with a bear. My kids saw a black bear in our yard a while ago. I've never seen one myself in town however a hometown facebook group is filled with bear in the yard videos. The bear population is exploding here in CT. There has been talk about allowing bear hunting but so far it is remains prohibited.
